Nissan has introduced the second-generation Kicks in Japan, bringing the latest version of the compact crossover to its home market; however, it has a significantly different powertrain strategy than the model sold in North America.
2027 Nissan Kicks | Photo: NissanWhile North American buyers receive a conventional 2.0L gasoline-powered vehicle, the new Japanese-spec Kicks gets a 1.4L three-cylinder gasoline engine that functions solely as a generator – the technology is known as e-Power. Vehicle propulsion is provided by electric motors, delivering a driving experience similar to an EV without needing to plug in and charge.
In front-wheel-drive configuration, the system pairs the generator engine with a front-mounted electric motor good for 141 hp. Buyers seeking additional traction can select the e-4ORCE AWD system, which adds a rear electric motor rated at 67 hp. The gasoline engine itself produces 97 hp.

From a styling perspective, the Japanese Kicks very closely follows the design we know in North America. Differences are limited to market-specific details including lighting elements and colour choices. The range begins with X and X+ trims featuring body cladding, while the higher-grade G model adds different LED lighting and 17-inch alloy wheels.
The cabin, rightfully so, adopts a right-hand-drive configuration. It is fitted with dual 12.3-inch displays. Available equipment includes Zero Gravity seating, perforated vegan leather upholstery, a 100-volt AC power outlet for external devices, and the company’s ProPilot driver-assistance package.

A notable addition to the Japanese lineup is the new Rock Creek variant. As with other Rock Creek editions, the model earns a more adventure-oriented appearance through unique grille detailing, dark front bumper accents, red exterior highlights, skid-plate-style trim pieces, and dedicated wheels. Inside, Rock Creek models receive matching red contrast stitching and waterproof seat materials. Nissan plans to begin customer deliveries in Japan this winter and will offer the trim in both front-wheel-drive and e-4ORCE all-wheel-drive configurations.
Pricing for the standard Kicks starts at ¥2,999,700, equivalent to roughly CDN$26,235. The base 2026 Kicks S retails for just over CDN$30,300 with fees. The range-topping AWD G grade reaches ¥4,248,200, or approximately US$37,160. Our top-trim SR Premium is priced at CDN$39,000. Nissan estimates the Rock Creek will be priced between ¥4 million and ¥4.3 million when it arrives later this year, or between CDN$35,000 and $37,200.
