Nissan May Resurrect Xterra Name for a Future True Off-Roader

The Xterra was last sold almost a decade ago and Nissan probably regrets it

Off-road vehicles are truly hot-ticket items at the moment. Be they petrol- or electron-powered, many automakers, start-up and legacy, are getting into the game of offering a vehicle capable of treading well off the beaten path. Nissan is no stranger to building these types of vehicles.

Nissan Shows Off Hyper Adventure Off-Road Concept

Elsewhere in the world, the Nissan Patrol is one of the most highly appreciated off-roaders, right alongside the likes of the Toyota Land Cruiser and 4Runner, Land Rover Defender, Ford Bronco, and Jeep Wrangler. Here in North America, while the Patrol was never offered, Nissan did sell the Xterra from 1999 to 2015. It was pulled from the shelves as sales were dwindling for a number of reasons, but had they held on for two or three years, they would have found themselves ahead the current wave of tough-SUVs.

Nissan Dealers Want Another Xterra

But not all is lost. According to carbuzz, Nissan may very well be considering the return of the Xterra however not as a direct competitor to the vehicles stated above but as an alternative to Volkswagen’s Scout brand, the Rivian SUVs, and other such EVs. As well, this Xterra is expected to be a real off-roader and not, for example, an Ariya with larger tires and cladding.

Thoughts are that last year’s Hyper Adventure Off-Road concept could serve as the teaser for the next Xterra. Whatever the next Nissan off-roader will tourn out to be, it’s an almost-certainty that it will be a pleaser and popular among EV drivers and off-roading enthusiasts.
