Nissan Tests Next-Gen LIDAR for Collision Avoidance

  • Nissan showcases its next-gen LIDAR-based driver-assistance tech for intersection collision avoidance.

  • Part of Nissan Ambition 2030, the system improves safety with advanced sensing and decision-making.

In a recent demonstration held at one of their European facilities, Nissan showcased the latest feature in its in-development LIDAR-based advanced driver-assistance technology: intersection collision avoidance. The demonstration brought to the fore the system’s automatic collision-avoidance maneuvers specifically tailored for the intricate environment of intersections.

Takao Asami, Senior Vice President and head of Nissan’s Research and Advanced Engineering Division, underscored the company’s commitment to the development of this technology under Nissan Ambition 2030, the firm’s long-term strategic plan. “By the mid-2020s, we anticipate the implementation of collision-avoidance technology leveraging next-generation LIDAR,” stated Asami. He further emphasized Nissan’s dedication to exhaustive comprehension of all accident scenarios by analyzing real-world, complex accidents to substantially improve accident avoidance.

The technology, utilizing a novel control logic for intersection collision avoidance, incorporates next-generation LIDAR and ground-truth perception technology. This enables the system to ascertain an object’s speed, location, and potential collision risk from lateral directions, responding promptly to evolving situations through actions such as emergency brake application or brake release when potential hazards have been circumvented.

Intersection accidents, often due to driver error, can lead to grave outcomes. Consequently, Nissan is designing this system to significantly improve the assistance provided in challenging circumstances through advanced sensor technology and refined decision-making capabilities.
