Race-car turned road model gets more power
Suspension and aero mods complete transformation
The McLaren 620R was a limited edition model that was derived from the 570S GT4 racer. A hard-core street car that was more at home on the track, that brought the 3.8L V8 up to 611 hp and 457 lb-ft of torque. Now the tuners at Novitec have turned the wick up even higher on the 620R, with a list of performance options that can boost it to 720 levels. That’s 711 hp and a top speed of 328 km/h.
It’s part of the beauty of McLaren‘s product portfolio. They all use variations on the 3.8L twin-turbo V8, so there is usually some more power to unlock down the road for those willing to push the envelope. Just 225 of these 620R models were built, so it’s no surprise that some buyers want the exclusivity of that figure but with a little more under the rear engine cover.
Novitec starts with the high-performance exhaust made from Inconel alloy, a light-weight, high-strength, and high-heat capable metal. The tuner says this adds to the power delivery and gives it an even more prominent exhaust note, in addition to shaving kilos. New engine mapping software takes advantage of the extra airflow, and replacement catalytic converters keep everything flowing and clean the air out the back. The driver can switch the tune back to stock with one button press for when they, for some reason, want to do that.
The suspension is tweaked with new springs that drop the car 25 mm. The springs work with the factory lift system. Lastly, new thin-spoke wheels are offered in 20-inch front and 21-inch rear sizes, and can be finished in one of dozens of colours.
Because every tuned car needs some bodywork tweaks, Novitec has bare carbon scoop replacements, side sills, and mirror caps to give the cars a little more visual pop.
