Nürburgring: The Volkswagen Golf R “20 Years” is the Fastest VW R Ever

The Volkswagen Golf R "20 years" has become the fastest VW R model around the Nürburgring.

  • The “20 years” edition adds 13 horsepower and makes the Performance package standard

  • Its lap time is 4 seconds faster than the regular Golf R

  • The “Special” drive mode offered on the Golf R “20 years” was developed especially for this track

The Volkswagen Golf R “20 years” has now become the fastest Volkswagen R model to race around the Nürburgring-Nordschleife, beating the regular Golf R by more than 4 seconds.

The Nürburgring is one of, if not the most famous race tracks around the world and many automakers make it their goal to set an impressive lap time on the 20,832-kilometres-long Nordschleife track with their new performance models.

Volkswagen recently launched the “20 years” limited edition of the new Golf R in order to celebrate the 20th anniversary of its R performance division which was established with the launch of the Golf R32 in 2002.

Compared to this first model, the current Golf R “20 years”, based on the 8th generation of the Golf, makes 91 additional horsepower and 73 ft-lb of torque more, despite having shed two cylinders along the way.

The “20 years” edition is able to edge the regular Golf R on the track due to its 13 extra horsepower that brings its output to 328 horsepower and its standard Performance package that features two exclusive drive modes.

One of these drive modes is called “Special” and it was developed with the Nürburgring in mind. Indeed, this mode keeps the engine and transmission at their peak performance settings, but unlike the “Race” mode, it softens up the suspension slightly in order to better be able to keep all wheels in contact with the road when going over bumps at high speeds.

This is important since the Nürburgring is not a traditional racing circuit where the pavement is perfectly flat everywhere.

This mode was used by Touring car race driver Benjamin Leuchter during the lap that beat the previous record established by the Mk8 Golf R with a new time of 7:47.31 minutes.

The automaker will only produce the “20 years” edition for one calendar year, so it will likely be one of the rarest R and even Volkswagen models ever.
