Omoda & Jaecoo Push Combustion Limits with New 48% Efficiency Hybrid Engine

Chery’s Omoda & Jaecoo's latest hybrid engine takes efficiency to another level, aiming to reduce emissions and fuel use.

  • New SHS engine reaches 48% thermal efficiency with advanced EGR, coatings, and high compression ratio.

  • Current SHS hybrid system offers 44.5% efficiency, 6.0 L/100 km fuel use, and 90 km EV range.

  • Hybrid safety features include impact-resistant battery and 2-millisecond crash-triggered power disconnection.

Omoda & Jaecoo, part of the Chery Group, have introduced a new combustion engine achieving 48% thermal efficiency, marking a technological milestone in hybrid powertrain development. The announcement was made at the 2025 International User Summit, where the company presented ongoing advancements under its Super Hybrid System (SHS) program.

The new engine integrates several proprietary technologies to reduce energy loss during combustion. These include a stunning 26:1 compression ratio (average ICE ratio is 10:1 to about 12:1), a triple-link hyperbolic crankshaft mechanism, 35 % exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), and thermal insulation coatings designed to minimize heat dissipation. The result is one of the highest thermal efficiencies seen in commercially oriented internal combustion engine designs to date.

According to the company, each percentage point gained in thermal efficiency can reduce fuel consumption by approximately 2.5 %, while simultaneously lowering carbon emissions. The new engine is part of the company’s growing hybrid strategy to support global energy transition goals.

Omoda & Jaecoo also showcased the current version of their SHS platform. It combines a 1.5-litre turbocharged direct-injection gasoline engine with the Miller combustion cycle, dual electric motors, and an intelligent hybrid transmission. The system achieves a 44.5%  thermal efficiency and fuel consumption as low as 6.0 litres per 100 kilometres.

Designed for both performance and efficiency, the SHS system automatically adjusts its operation based on vehicle speed and load conditions. The hybrid battery pack is built with safety and longevity in mind, resisting high temperatures, physical shocks, and water immersion. In the event of a collision, a high-speed disconnection system cuts battery power within 2 milliseconds.

The hybrid system also provides up to 90 kilometres WLTP of electric-only range and includes a vehicle-to-load (V2L) feature capable of supplying up to 3.3 kilowatts to external equipment or appliances.

While the Chery Group continues to invest in electrification, the Omoda & Jaecoo brand sees hybrid technology as a near-term solution to reducing global fuel use and emissions. The SHS project balances combustion engine innovation with increasing electrified capabilities.
