Travis Pastrana’s final Gymkhana film was shot across iconic Australian locations and tracks
The custom Subaru Brataroo delivers 670 horsepower with advanced active aero for stunt performance.
Cameos include top Australian motorsport figures and local cultural elements like the “shoey.”
Hoonigan and Subaru Motorsports USA have released Aussie Shred, the latest and perhaps most densely action-packed entry in the Gymkhana video series, featuring Travis Pastrana in his final performance behind the wheel. Filmed entirely in Australia, the video showcases Pastrana daring gravity, water, and motion sickness across varied terrain including Sydney Harbour, the Outback, and Mount Panorama in Bathurst.
The magnificent car featured in the film, a one-off Subaru “Brataroo,” was engineered by Subaru of America in partnership with Vermont SportsCar. Inspired by the 1978 Subaru BRAT, the Brataroo is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged boxer engine that produces 670 horsepower and 680 lb-ft of torque, with a redline above 9,500 RPM. The build incorporates rallycross elements and what Subaru describes as the most advanced active aerodynamic system used in a Gymkhana car.

The film includes several high-speed and precision-driving stunts, such as a 160-foot canyon jump over a road train, and the turbo boxer-4 vs. V8 drag race on Mount Panorama’s Conrod Straight. In one scene, Pastrana drives off a pier with two wheels hanging off the edge. Our favourite part, which at first doesn’t seem all that crazy, is when the Brataroo skips on water thanks to its entirely flat bottom. The stunt’s difficulty becomes apparent at the end of the film.
Cameos in the film include Australian motorsport personalities such as two-time Dakar Rally champion Toby Price, former Subaru WRC driver Chris Atkinson, and a group of V8 Supercars drivers. Circus also appear, along with YouTube creators Moog and Marty from Mighty Car Mods. Several cultural references are featured, including the local tradition known as the “shoey.”

Director and Hoonigan co-founder Brian Scotto said Australia had long been a target location for the series. A previous attempt to film in the country was blocked due to local anti-hooning legislation. The completion of the project a decade later follows new cooperation with Australian authorities. The film also pays homage to the late Ken Block, who co-founded the Gymkhana series.
Aussie Shred was produced in collaboration with several brand sponsors, including KMC Wheels, Heat Wave Visual, Dixxon Flannel, Mercury Marine and Yokohama Tire.
