Cyber Tyre sensors measure road roughness and tire data for real-time infrastructure insights.
Univrses cameras add visual data on signage and road surfaces to enhance mapping precision.
Data from Apulia’s fleet vehicles will be visualized through dashboards for public authorities.
The Apulia regional government and Pirelli will begin a pilot program in July 2025 to monitor the state of road infrastructure using tire-integrated sensors and onboard cameras. The initiative will deliver real-time data to support safer, more efficient roadway maintenance by creating a digital map of road conditions.
The project marks the first integration of Pirelli’s Cyber Tyre system with Univrses camera analytics on a government-managed vehicle fleet. The Cyber Tyre features sensors embedded within the tire tread that track tire pressure, temperature, and asphalt irregularities. These data are processed by proprietary software and algorithms developed by Pirelli.

Complementing the tire-based system, cameras developed by Swedish company Univrses will monitor road surfaces and both horizontal and vertical signage. The combined system will transmit information to the cloud, where it will be processed and displayed through digital dashboards accessible by regional authorities.
The first vehicles equipped with the integrated monitoring system will begin service in July 2025. The fleet will be provided by Ayvens, a European company specializing in long-term vehicle rentals and fleet management.
The pilot builds on a collaboration between Apulia and Pirelli. In 2022, Pirelli opened its Digital Solutions Center (DSC) in Bari. The DSC is a software-focused research hub developed in partnership with the University of Bari and Bari Politecnico. It supports projects in smart manufacturing, tire design optimization, and artificial intelligence applications.
“The Apulia Region is proud of this forward-looking agreement, as we always are when it comes to ensuring the safety of citizens. Technology can save lives. In this case, it will be useful as a thermometer of the state of health of our roads,” said Apulia President Michele Emiliano during a press conference in Bari. He added that the partnership with Pirelli does not incur costs for the regional government.
