The partnership is an expansion of the existing relationship following an initial MOU and investment from SK On in Polestar.
Polestar has formally announced an agreement with SK On, a South Korean battery manufacturer, to procure battery cell modules for its eagerly anticipated Polestar 5 model. The agreement marks a significant step in the collaboration between the two companies, positioning SK On’s advanced battery cells—characterized by their high energy density and long 56 cm format—as a core component of the Polestar 5’s electric powertrain. This battery technology is expected to deliver robust performance metrics, including rapid charging capabilities and efficient energy discharge, which are crucial for the vehicle’s range and power.
Thomas Ingenlath, CEO of Polestar, acknowledged the fruitful relationship with SK On, highlighting the integration of the high-capacity batteries as essential to meeting the grand tourer’s performance benchmarks. From SK On’s perspective, CEO Jee Dong-seob expressed enthusiasm for strengthening their partnership with Polestar through this venture, hinting at future collaborations and opportunities.
The Polestar 5 is in active development, following the lineage of the Polestar Precept concept vehicle. Its journey from concept to reality is being documented in a YouTube series, offering insights into the vehicle’s evolution. The production of the Polestar 5 is slated for a 2025 start date.
