Polestar 3 will be built alongside next XC90
SC plant will build for US market
Polestar has just announced that its next model will be built in North America. The next model, a performance crossover called the Polestar 3, will be built at Volvo’s South Carolina plant for sale in the US (as well as likely Canada).
The automaker isn’t showing us the Polestar 3 just yet but did show a side profile of the model with a sheet over it. The new electric model shows razor-sharp lines even under a cover, as well as a Kamm-style tail that looks more than a little bit like a Cobra Daytona Coupe. Which definitely has our attention.
“Polestar 3 will be built in America, for our American customers,” says Thomas Ingenlath, Polestar CEO. “I remember the great response when I first shared Polestar’s vision here in the USA and I am proud that our first SUV will be manufactured in South Carolina. From now on, the USA is no longer an export market but a home market.”
The South Carolina plant was opened by Volvo Cars in 2018. Volvo Cars announced last year that it planned to build a battery plant nearby to allow it to produce an electric version of the XC90 crossover at the plant. The Polestar 3 will join that crossover and production is set to start in the second half of next year.
Polestar 3 will share a platform with the XC90, called SPA2. The Polestar 1 and 2 models are built in China at a shared facility there.
In addition to helping cut costs and make the brand more competitive in the US, Polestar COO Dennis Nobelius says that it will help the brand reduce delivery times and cut the environmental impact of shipping completed vehicles overseas.
