Porsche Shows Off Electric Macan in Global Testing Regimen

Get ready for Macan Electric

  • Electric Macan reveal expected this month

  • EV will offer 600+ hp, 500 km range

Porsche is putting the electric Macan through its paces, letting us have a look at the first PPE architecture Porsche as it splashes dramatically through mud and rides down a dusty highway. There are some more details about the model, too.

“When we develop a new model, it’s always about the driving dynamics and precision. That’s Porsche. It’s in our DNA. But it’s always about efficiency too. And design,” says Jörg Kerner, Vice President Product Line Macan.

For Porsche, that means the Macan’s designers spent a lot of time in the wind tunnel. They’ve tweaked and nudged the Macan’s shape until the coefficient of drag hit an impressive 0.25. Down from 0.35 in the old gas model. It will also have active aerodynamics to help boost range, including an automatic spoiler and active cooling flaps.

There are more moving elements hiding underneath. Fairings that don’t move with power, but that are flexible to “ensure low air resistance when rebounding.” Mostly closed-wheel designs and even aero-optimised tire contours all help improve efficiency. Porsche says that every variant of the new Macan will top 500 km of range on the WLTP cycle.

The 800V battery pack will have 95 kWh of usable energy. The pack will be capable of 270 kW L3 fast charging, meaning 10-80 percent in just 22 minutes.

Porsche has done the usual testing in -30C cold weather and +50C hot weather. Camouflaged prototypes have driven more than 3.5 million km on tracks as well as on the road.

Lastly, the motors. Porsche’s latest electric motors will offer more than 600 hp and 740 lb-ft of torque on overboost mode. That’s more than 150 hp better than the most powerful current-generation Macan.

The Porsche Macan EV is expected to be fully revealed sometime later this month.
