There are 645,000 vehicles on this fleet.
These new EVs will be American made.
There is no current timeline for the fleet overhaul.
President Biden took office less than a week ago and already he’s taken a number of actions that are decidedly pro-environment. So, it comes as no real surprise that he’s announced that the US federal fleet of vehicles will be replaced by American-made EVs.
Pres. Biden: “The federal government also owns an enormous fleet of vehicles, which we’re going to replace with clean electric vehicles made right here in America, by American workers.”https://t.co/figJbDMrpt pic.twitter.com/racgwk9VGw

As you might imagine, the fleet is massive. There are over 645,000 vehicles across the country. Of those, 245,000 are civilian vehicles while 173,000 are for military purposes. The final 225,000 are post office vehicles and they’re likely to be the first to go.
As reported by electrek, most USPS vehicles are Grumman LLV and they date back to the 1980s. Their routes are typically short with many stop-and-go situations. This kind of “work” is ideal for EVs. Other vehicles are far more specialized which means they will avoid replacement in the short term.
The goal is manifold, as is always the case with switching over to EVs. The fuel savings alone will be considerable, as will maintenance costs.
