The Model 3 took the electric sedan out of the early-adopter niche. Millions of units later, its powertrain remains among the most robust in the industry. What was missing early on was assembly consistency, followed by a long list of recalls, mostly software, that still need to be traced before buying a used one. The useful habit: run the VIN through Transport Canada.
- Loose front suspension bolts (2018-2021). The front tie rods can separate and alter wheel geometry. Two “Safety” campaigns. Mandatory dealer repair.
- Loose brake caliper bolts (2019-2021). Safety campaign. Dealer inspection and tightening. Volume remains low in Canada, but severity can be high.
- Build quality and soft paint (2017-2019). Uneven panel gaps and fragile paint on the earliest units. Improvement acknowledged by late 2019.
- Emergency door opening (mostly interior). Flush exterior door handles, in the case an electrical failure, the interior manual release is hard to find. No recall.
Technical briefing
This report covers the Model 3 from 2017 to 2023. In 2024, Tesla released a heavily revised version, the Highland. That’s not just a new look. The suspension changed. So did the front structure. And how it all mounts to the chassis. A 2023 and a 2024 don’t share the same failures or the same recalls. So we treat them separately.
For the Canadian market, this generation of the Model 3 is mostly built in Fremont. A brief window in 2023 also saw units from Giga Shanghai. You can spot the origin from the VIN. 5YJ for Fremont, LRW for Shanghai.

Three trim levels were offered in Canada. Standard Range / Standard Range Plus (RWD), Long Range (RWD or AWD depending on the period), and Performance (AWD). Starting in 2021, some North American Standard Range Plus units received an LFP battery instead of the original NCA. Confirm the configuration by VIN, not just the name in the seller’s listing.
The Performance trim is the most powerful and quickest, with no distinct issue besides the track mode recall (TC 2022-199).

Most frequent problems
For this 2017-2023 generation, Transport Canada lists twenty-four distinct recalls, issued between 2019 and 2026. Seven require a dealer visit. Seventeen are resolved through a remote update. The ones affecting suspension and brakes are covered here because of their severity. Full details on the dealer-visit campaigns are in the “The recalls” section.
Front suspension bolts (tie rods)
The tie rods connect the front suspension to the subframe. On some units, bolts that were under-torqued at the factory, or that loosened with use, can separate. Wheel geometry then changes suddenly, and the risk is a loss of stability.
Two campaigns cover this defect: the initial one (TC 2021-649, 2019-2021) and its extension (TC 2023-194, which adds 2018-2019). Both are classified “Safety.” A dealer visit is required for inspection, tightening, or bolt replacement. A 2018-2021 buyer should confirm through the VIN that the repair was done.

Loose brake caliper bolts
On some 2019-2021 Model 3s, brake caliper bolts could loosen. That’s campaign TC 2021-318. If the caliper shifts enough to contact the wheel, tire pressure can drop suddenly. The fix involves a dealer inspection and tightening, with towing if damage is found. Volume remains low in Canada, but severity can be high, so this is worth checking systematically on a used car from these years.
The recalls
Seven recalls from this generation require a dealer visit for inspection or physical repair. These cover the front suspension, seatbelts, brakes, the backup camera harness, and the airbag label.
Seventeen other campaigns are resolved solely through a remote software update. They aren’t listed one by one here. On a used car that stayed connected to Tesla’s network, the fix has very often already been applied. The VIN remains the only proof, though.
Unlike the older Model S and Model X (MCU1 screen and well-documented flash memory wear), the Model 3 uses MCU2 from 2017 on. It doesn’t share the same flash memory problem. Its infotainment recalls remain isolated, like processor overheating during fast charging on 2022 units, fixed via update.

Technical service bulletins and recurring complaints
Beyond the recalls that force a dealer visit, several issues keep coming up among owners. They don’t necessarily rule out a purchase, but they help pick the right model year and the right inspection.

Build quality and soft paint (2017-2019)
The very earliest units (2017-2018) suffered from uneven panel gaps and fragile paint. In 2018, Tesla’s leadership acknowledged a period of “production hell” and excessive automation at the factory. No official recall targeted the paint, it’s a perceived-quality issue. Consumer Reports, which had pulled its recommendation in 2018, restored it in November 2019 after a clear improvement.
Emergency door opening
On the Model 3, the exterior door handles sit flush with the body. You press the wide end with your thumb, the handle pivots toward you, then you pull. They don’t present themselves automatically as the key approaches, like on the Model S.
The real documented safety issue is on the inside. The electric door-open buttons stop working without power, and the manual backup release is hard to see and not intuitive. After a collision that knocked out the electrical system, one owner had to break a rear window to get out.
In November 2025, an NHTSA petition requested a defect investigation on this point (2022 Model 3). In July 2026, the agency declined to open a defect investigation, citing insufficient grounds. It did, however, launch a broader industry-wide review of egress standards. No recall has been issued.

Rear motor-reducer whine
Several owners report a progressive whine from the rear motor-reducer unit, linked to bearing wear. It typically shows up between 48,000 and 129,000 km, a bit more common on 2017-2020 units. It’s not a recall, and the repair is done under warranty as needed. The powertrain is still considered among the most reliable in the industry. In winter, a more noticeable noise can also just reflect battery preconditioning in extreme cold, not a failure.
Phantom braking under driver assistance
Phantom braking is a sudden, unwanted deceleration: roughly 16 to 32 km/h over 1 to 3 seconds, at highway speed, with adaptive cruise Autopilot or supervised Full Self-Driving engaged. The presumed cause is the shift from radar-plus-camera perception to mostly camera-based perception.
NHTSA opened an investigation (PE22002, 2022) covering roughly 695,000 2021-2022 Model 3 and Model Y units. Complaints dropped from about 300 when the case opened in 2022 to 3 since the start of 2026, as software fixes rolled out. The investigation was closed in June 2026 with no confirmed collision and no recall issued.

Early corrosion in road-salt climates
The Model 3’s construction has a weak point at the front wheel wells. The steel there is exposed to sand and salt, especially behind the wheel well liners. In Quebec and the rest of Canada, owners report surface corrosion after a few winters: rocker panels near the rear wheels, around the trunk opening, and hidden areas behind the liners.
We recommend rinsing the underbody and wheel wells regularly after road salt exposure. Tesla’s own manual actually requires it for the corrosion warranty. Also inspect behind the liners. Mud flaps help limit gravel spray and slow accelerated deterioration. Aftermarket rust-proofing treatments remain controversial: Tesla has contested some warranty claims after application, and this surface damage might not be covered. A thorough body inspection is warranted with any Model 3 purchase.
What owners are saying
Overall, owners often remain very satisfied with the Model 3: energy efficiency, torque, the Supercharger network, and updates that keep it feeling new. EV satisfaction surveys regularly put it at or near the top. Perceived quality improves noticeably after 2019.
Complaints still come up, though. Owners mention soft paint and stone chips, as well as inconsistent Tesla service wait times, especially for bodywork. On real-world winter range in Quebec, a CAA test measured roughly a 30% loss on a Model 3.
Phantom braking and uneven fit-and-finish on the earliest model years still come up in owner accounts. The service experience is polarized: effective for remote fixes, more frustrating when a part or an in-person appointment is needed.

To wrap up
The first-generation Model 3 is built around one of the most reliable electric powertrains ever produced. Build quality was inconsistent early on, and the recall list, mostly software, is long.
For 2017-2018, inspect the paint and panel gaps. For 2018-2021, confirm the suspension recalls (TC 2021-649 / TC 2023-194) and the caliper bolt recall (TC 2021-318). Volume remains low, but severity can be high. For 2018-2022, check the seatbelt recalls (TC 2021-321, TC 2022-604). 2022 concentrates the most software campaigns, including the phantom braking investigation, closed with no confirmed risk. For 2023, what’s left is mainly steering (TC 2025-034) and the hood latch (TC 2024-427), both resolved by software.
For the vast majority of purely software recalls, a used vehicle that stayed connected to Tesla’s network has most likely already received the fix automatically. Confirm the software version on the vehicle’s screen anyway. And always check the VIN at recalls-rappels.canada.ca.
