Production of the “new” Chevrolet Bolt will be limited!

The Chevrolet Bolt will return in the coming months, but GM is already warning that production will be limited — which also means limited availability. Buyers, take note.

  • Accelerated return thanks to the reuse of the EUV body structure
  • Integration of new low-cost LFP batteries produced in Tennessee

Chevrolet is bringing back its Bolt subcompact electric vehicle, a model priced below US$30,000, just as the U.S. EV market adjusts to the loss of federal incentives. Canadian pricing has yet to be confirmed, but historically, the Bolt has been one of the most affordable EVs in the country — and that’s likely to remain true with the 2027 model.

A symbol of affordability

“The Bolt was the industry’s first affordable, long-range EV for the mass market, and it earned one of GM’s most loyal customer bases,” said Scott Bell, Global Vice President of Chevrolet. “Its comeback is a direct response to customer demand.”

Controlled production

General Motors confirms that this second-generation Bolt will be built in limited quantities, without revealing production volumes or program duration. Manufacturing will begin later this year at GM’s Fairfax plant in Kansas, operating on a single shift, while the launch of a second shift has been indefinitely postponed.

Chevrolet adds that the Bolt, alongside the compact Equinox EV, will represent the bulk of the brand’s electric sales in 2026, supported by other models such as the Blazer EV and Silverado EV.

A fast and strategic comeback

The Bolt’s return comes just two years after its production ended. Originally discontinued in 2023, the compact EV was based on an older battery platform. In July of that same year, CEO Mary Barra announced its return on an “accelerated timeline.”

To meet this tight schedule, engineers kept the Bolt EUV’s body panels while updating the battery, electrical system, drive unit, and braking modules. Roughly half of the components are new or revised, according to chief engineer Jeremy Short. This approach allowed GM to save billions of dollars by avoiding the development of a brand-new entry-level EV platform.

It’s worth remembering that both the Bolt EV and EUV were phased out when GM planned to introduce a base version of the new Equinox EV — a variant that never materialized for financial reasons, leaving a significant gap in Chevrolet’s lineup.

New batteries and improved range

The 2027 Bolt will be the first GM vehicle to use lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, initially supplied by an international partner and later produced locally in Tennessee through a joint venture with LG Energy Solution.

This new chemistry allows for an estimated 410 km (255 miles) of range and a 10–80% recharge in just 26 minutes on a DC fast charger, more than twice as quick as the 2023 model.

Redesigned interior and updated technology

Inside, the 2027 Bolt features an 11.3-inch central touchscreen and an 11-inch digital driver display, both powered by Google Built-In. The cabin layout has been redesigned to add storage space and includes a column-mounted gear selector. A sunroof and Super Cruise hands-free driving system will also be available starting in 2026.
