R35 Nissan GT-R Fades Into the Sunset

  • The R35 GT-R is gone this year

  • So here’s an Orange Z instead

The R35 Nissan GT-R is dead, Nissan has confirmed. The automaker called it a sunset, not the end of the line, meaning that a next-gen model is likely on the way. To help maybe make the wait a little easier, Nissan is also building a special version of the 2024 Nissan Z.

Nissan has been building the current GT-R for 17 years, which makes it positively ancient by new-car standards. Despite that, the car’s performance is still impressive, with the 3.8L twin-turbo V6 delivering well over 500 hp. Nissan likes to point out that it can still show its taillights to much more expensive hardware on the track.

U.S Nissan customers get two special edition models for the last year of the GT-R. 2024 will see a Takumi edition of the T-Spec car in iconic Midnight Purple and a Bayside Blue take on the GT-R Premium. Canadian buyers can get Midnight Purple (and Millennium Jade) on their T-Spec cars without the other Takumi bits like a red engine badge and gold vin, but they won’t be offered the Bayside Blue – that iconic R34 colour.

Without confirming its plans, Nissan is blunt about the future of the GT-R, though. “Sunsets always come before a new dawn approaches,” the press release says. Which means that there is an R36 generation car coming, hopefully sooner rather than later.

The 2024 Nissan Z Heritage Edition is a Z that’s meant to make you nostalgic for the very first 240Z cars. The Heritage Edition wears a vintage-look orange paint with black grapcis, but it also has a new fascia with an even more 1970’s-look nose than the current car. Then there are the fender flares that add a perfect touch of classic cool, with new 19-inch wheels to fill them up.

Nissan is making the Heritage Edition based on the Z Performance, with its 400 hp 3.0L TT V6 and a six-speed stick or nine-speed auto. It goes on sale this summer, starting from $59,135 in the U.S.
