Ram Announces the Return of the ProMaster City Van

Since Carlos Tavares stepped down as Stellantis’ CEO in December 2024, the flurry of decisions from the group’s American divisions has been impressive. In fact, it’s not so much the volume of decisions as it is their nature; they speak for themselves. The fact is, they reflect a desire that was likely simmering within the brand’s North American leadership but was held back by the former CEO’s philosophy.

  • The Ram ProMaster City ended its run after 2022

  • The compact commercial van segment is currently nonexistent.

  • No timeline yet for the Ram ProMaster City’s return

Since then, everything has changed, and we’re seeing the group’s American brands become… American again. Of course, the political climate in the United States has influenced certain decisions, like the return of the V8 engine in select models. Still, others also show that the company’s American divisions now have more room to maneuver.

Case in point, Ram, which just announced the return of a model that left our automotive landscape at the end of 2022: the ProMaster City van.

The commercial vehicle world is unique in its own right, and we have fewer opportunities to dive into it, but it’s critically important to manufacturers. It’s worth noting that Ram’s decision couldn’t come at a better time, as several manufacturers have abandoned the compact van segment in recent years, including Mercedes-Benz with its Metris, Nissan with its NV, Chevrolet with its City Express, and Ford with its Transit Connect.

Would Dodge and Ram Reunite? Ram CEO Responds to Ongoing Debate

Ram boss Tim Kuniskis confirmed that the ProMaster City will return during an exclusive interview with Mopar Insiders at the recent Detroit Auto Show. The executive explained that Ram is renewing its commitment to commercial vehicles.

What will be interesting to watch is what type of powertrain it will feature. It would be surprising to see an all-electric option, considering the company scrapped that idea for the Ram pickup. Still, a hybrid or extended-range electric solution (with a gas engine serving as a generator) could make a lot of sense. That said, the full-size Ram ProMaster is available as an all-electric model.

We’ll keep you posted as more details emerge.
