The Ram brand is preparing to venture off the beaten path, and no, we’re not talking about off-road driving here. Indeed, it has announced plans to market an SUV starting in 2028, marking a first for this division.
The Ram brand has been independent since 2010
Ram plans its first SUV for 2028
The Ram name was first used in 1981 by Dodge
A young division, it must be said, as it was created in 2010 and separated from Dodge. As for the Ram name, it takes us back to 1981 in Dodge’s history.
The planned SUV will enable the brand to diversify, as it currently only offers trucks and vans. The former actually represents 85% of the company’s sales this year.
Antonio Filosa, the head of Stellantis, made this announcement during a briefing with Wall Street analysts on October 30.
Ram will build the anticipated model in Michigan. The newcomer will feature two different powertrains: a gas engine, as well as an extended-range plug-in hybrid solution.
Adding an SUV to the lineup will help it better compete with brands like Chevrolet, GMC, and Ford, which all offer utility vehicles.
This announcement comes in the wake of the $13 billion USD in investments the company also announced earlier this month, concerning production on American soil. It’s also strongly linked to the changes made at the top of Stellantis, as since Carlos Tavares’ departure last December, announcements regarding new products that cater more to the needs of American consumers have been increasing. In fact, Antonio Filosa stated the U.S. market was “a key priority for our success because when we are strong in the U.S., we are stronger and better as a company everywhere.”
Other announcements targeting North American consumers have already been made. We’ve seen that Ram is bringing back the V8 engine under the hood of its 1500 trucks, and we also know that the brand is preparing two SRT models for unveiling in the coming months.

They will be the first in a new series that is expected to roll out by 2030.
It will be interesting to see the impacts of all this, but analysts agree that the decision is the right one for Ram. Among them is Sam Fiorani, vice president of global vehicle forecasting at AutoForecast Solutions: “Ram buyers are loyal to the brand, which allows them to add a family vehicle to their garage to complement their pickup. It will enable Stellantis to increase its plant volume, where Jeeps simply aren’t filling capacity.”
