Ram to Remove eTorque from Hemi-Powered 2027 1500 Pickups

  • eTorque is a mild-hybrid system that has been available on 5,7L Hemi and 3,6L Pentastar engines since 2019.

  • This system is standard on the 2026 Ram 1500 Hemi.

  • Due to a rollback of U.S. environmental protection regulations, Ram will remove eTorque along with auto start/stop from its 2027 models with the Hemi engine.

A year after returning the Hemi V8 engine to its 1500 pickups, Ram has taken another decision that is likely to be popular with customers: removing the eTorque system.

Indeed, the automaker has confirmed to Motor1 that its mild hybrid technology will be removed from most 2027 models with the V8 engine, along with the associated auto start/stop system.

eTorque is a 48-volt system that replaces the alternator with a small electric motor/generator that can provide a torque boost under acceleration and smooth out the operation of the start/stop system.

This technology has been available on the 3.6L Pentastar V6 and the 5,7L Hemi V8 since 2019, when the current generation of the Ram 1500 pickup was introduced.

When Ram brought back the 5,7L engine in 2026 after a one-year hiatus, it made e-Torque standard.

This proved unpopular with a portion of truck buyers who distrust hybridized powertrains or don’t like having the engine turn off when stopped in traffic.

Under previous U.S. environmental protection rules, automakers gained compliance credits when including auto start/stop on their vehicles, as this system can help reduce fuel consumption and polluting emissions.

Unsurprisingly, the current Trump administration rolled back these rules back in February, letting automakers remove auto start/stop and mild hybrid systems without being penalized.

It sounds like some 2027 Ram 1500 models with the Hemi engine will be equipped with eTorque, but non-eTorque models should start reaching dealerships this fall, after which all Ram V8s will be non hybrid.

With that said, the automaker claimed that eTorque will remain available in its lineup depending on models and markets. This might suggest that Canadian Ram 1500 Hemis could still come with eTorque, but this hasn’t been confirmed.

More details about which models might still be available with the mild hybrid technology should be revealed in the coming months, as Ram and the rest of the Stellantis family confirm the specifications of their 2027 model year vehicles.
