Subaru and Toyota expected to announce another shared EV
Three-row electric crossover would be built in U.S.
The Subaru and Toyota partnership is expected to keep going, with the big T building another EV for Subaru starting in 2025. This one will be a three-row crossover, according to a new report.
The upcoming Toyota three-row EV is set for 2025 and will be built at a plant in Kentucky. According to a new report from Automotive News, the plant will build a version of that same model for partner Subaru. The two automakers currently partner for the Subaru BRZ/Toyota GR86 sport coupe and the Toyota bZ4X/Subaru Solterra compact electric crossovers. All four of those are built in Japan.
It’s expected that Toyota will use the bZ5X name for its EV, but there are no firm guesses for the Ascent-sized Subaru. The brand has said that it plans to have four EV crossovers in its lineup by 2026, up from just one now.
Building the two EVs in KY, with battery assembly in NC, means that both should qualify for the full $7,500 tax incentive offered under the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act. The bZ4X/Solterra do not qualify.
When the first EVs launched, the two companies said that Toyota led manufacturing while Subaru led off-road capability. This new model will likely follow the same guide. Toyota owns approximately 20 percent of Subaru, while Subaru has a less than half-percent share in Toyota.
