Rivian Adds New Adventure Network site opened to other EVs

  • More sites like the one in Joshua Tree are planned.

  • Tesla vehicle owners will need an adapter.

American manufacturer Rivian has set itself apart from the competition by entering the market with a pair of vehicles designed for adventure. In fact, some of the brand’s network of charging stations are even located in places that are ideal for “off the grid” exploration. But as of today, December 5, 2024, the network of charging stations, also known as the Rivian Adventure Network, is now accessible to other EVs in the industry.

Not far from California’s Joshua Tree National Park, the company’s first Rivian rapid charging station open to other EVs has taken up residence. “We’re excited to bring the Rivian Adventure Network, with its ease of use and exceptional reliability, to other EV drivers […] To achieve widespread electrification, you also need a really good charging network,” said Rivian CEO R.J. Scaringe.

The site is equipped with fast charging stations capable of supplying most electric vehicles on the market, apart from Tesla models. Tesla vehicle owners can, however, access the terminals with an adapter. For the time being, it is not known whether this new formula, described as “next generation”, will be applied to the hundred or so recharging sites located near recreational parks.

The Joshua Tree site, in addition to charging stations, offers a “lounge” type place to relax, with snacks and information on electric charging and the surrounding area.

On the other hand, Rivian promises to build some of these more modern sites in Colorado, Texas, Illinois, Montana, Pennsylvania, Michigan and New York as well.

In addition, the manufacturer plans to update its charging stations with the new standard that is becoming increasingly widespread in North America, known as NACS (North American Charging Standard). Rivian will implement this standard on its vehicles from 2026 only. For the time being, Rivian vehicles can be charged at a Tesla or NACS charging station using an adapter.

Rivian’s new openness to competing electric vehicles is necessary to broaden the spectrum of electric automobiles. With more charging stations distributed across the continent and simplified ease-of-use, driving an EV will no longer be such a nerve-wracking adventure.
