Rivian CEO says R3X remains in development and is still several years away.

Rivian has provided its clearest indication yet of when customers can expect the highly anticipated R3X electric crossover, with CEO RJ Scaringe stating the vehicle is still “a couple of years away” from launch.
The update offers the first meaningful timeline for the enthusiastically cool performance-oriented model since Rivian unveiled the R3 and R3X concepts alongside the R2 in 2024. While the company has not announced a formal release date, Scaringe said Rivian has a defined internal schedule and continues to advance the vehicle’s development.
The timing suggests the R3X could enter production around 2028, potentially reaching customers as a 2029 model-year vehicle. This timeline fits with Rivian’s plans for its new manufacturing facility in Georgia, which should become a key production hub for the company’s next-generation vehicles.
The Georgia plant, being developed near Atlanta, is expected to support an annual capacity of up to 300,000 vehicles. Rivian has previously indicated that both the more affordable and volume-oriented R2 and R3 families will be produced at the site.
Interest in the R3X has remained strong since its debut thanks to its rugged hot-hatch vibe. The vehicle combines compact dimensions with a more aggressive performance focus than the standard R3. Rivian has said the R3X will feature a tri-motor electric powertrain, while the standard R3 is expected to offer single-motor and dual-motor configurations.
The R3 and R3X share the R2’s architecture but with a shorter wheelbase. Concept versions shown previously included features such as a separately opening rear glass section and flat-folding seats to increase cargo space.
Beyond the powertrain upgrades and helping feed the vibe, the R3X should roll on wider tires, with increased ground clearance, and styling elements aimed at all kinds of enthusiasts. The model has attracted significant attention from prospective buyers looking for a smaller, performance-oriented EV option.
The update comes as Rivian begins R2 deliveries in the U.S. Canadian pricing and details are still unknown.
