The R1S is the second consumer vehicle from Rivian
It is an SUV based very closely on the R1T pickup which began deliveries in September
The goals for 2021 were only 25 Units made and 15 delivered
Rivian delivered the first two production units of its R1S SUV this week, a couple of months after the closely related R1T pickup began to reach customers.
This model is an SUV that shares the same platform, mechanicals and most of the technology from the R1T pickup and it is only the second consumer model produced by Rivian, which also produces electric delivery vans for Amazon.
The automaker is currently in the process of increasing production of the R1T and introducing the R1S on the market. Since September, only a couple hundred units of the pickup have reached customers and we don’t expect the R1S to launch with massive production figures, since the goal for 2021 was only 25 units produced and 15 delivered to their owners.
The company didn’t reveal if the two R1S SUVs were bought by employees or unrelated customers.
According to Rivian, the goal for 2021 where not to achieve mass production, but rather to obtain certification for all three of its models and begin delivering them, which it should be able to do, with 10 units of the delivery van planned to enter Amazon’s fleet by the end of the year.
In order to pick up production and fulfill its pre-orders, Rivian plans to increase production capacity at its Normal, Illinois plant by 50,000 units and build a new factory in Georgia that should open in 2024.
