Rivian's second-generation R1S SUV and R1T pickup feature improved performance, new technology, and updated designs

  • Rivian’s second-gen R1S and R1T feature significant performance boosts and cutting-edge technology.

  • New motor configurations and battery packs extend range up to an estimated 676 km.

  • Advanced safety and design upgrades enhance user experience and sustainability.

Electric vehicle maker Rivian has revealed the next generation of its flagship R1S SUV and R1T pickup truck, boasting significant performance improvements, cutting-edge technology integration, and updated designs.

The completely reengineered models feature hundreds of hardware advancements, performance boosts, an overhauled software experience, and new in-house designed drive systems. While maintaining Rivian’s iconic exterior styling, the second-gen vehicles introduce an advanced zonal electrical architecture and entirely new compute and autonomy platforms.

“Our revamped R1S and R1T push the technical boundaries further, creating our most capable products to date,” said RJ Scaringe, Rivian’s founder and CEO.

Performance has received a major boost, with Rivian debuting its own Tri-Motor and Quad-Motor configurations. The top-spec Quad-Motor R1T delivers an astonishing 1,025 horsepower and can accelerate from 0-96 km/h in under 2.5 seconds thanks to its 1,198 lb-ft of torque when launch mode is engaged. A Dual-Motor variant is also available.

Range has been extended through new Large and Max battery packs offering up to an estimated 676 km, alongside a more affordable lithium iron phosphate Standard pack with 435 km of range. Efficiency is improved via a redesigned heat pump thermal system and slippery new 22-inch aero wheel designs.

Central to the redesign is Rivian’s all-new electrical architecture, which consolidates 17 control units down to just 7, maximizing efficiency and reducing wiring by 2.6 km per vehicle. The Rivian Autonomy Platform also debuts, packing 11 cameras, five radars, and advanced AI prediction powered by 10 times more compute than the previous system.

Safety tech has been upgraded too, with standard features like high-res camera blind spot monitoring and highway assist. An available premium autonomy package adds lane change on command initially, with enhanced highway assist coming later this year.

On the design front, the second gen R1S and R1T gain new headlights with upcoming adaptive drive beam tech, a panoramic dynamic glass roof that can electronically tint, and customizable ambient lighting. Digital car keys integrated with Apple Wallet and Google are offered, as is Rivian’s new Dolby Atmos sound system.

Rivian has redesigned the infotainment experience too, now powered by the Unreal Engine with a playful graphical style. The new Connect+ subscription unlocks video streaming and provides access to over 3,000 apps on the center display.

Two premium Ascend trim levels join the lineup, as does a new Storm Blue exterior colour with available blackout accents. On the sustainability front, the next-gen R1 vehicles boast a 15% lower lifetime carbon footprint than their predecessors.

Pricing for the 2024 Rivian R1S starts at $111,900 CAD, while the R1T pickup begins at $102,900. Both models will begin deliveries in Canada between September and October 2024, produced at Rivian’s facility in Normal, Illinois.
