Rivian, the California-based electric vehicle startup, has made a significant update to its R1S SUV offering. The company’s official website now displays the option for the all-electric SUV to be configured with the Max Pack battery. This new battery offers an impressive EPA-estimated range of 400 miles. The discovery of this change was credited to a Rivian Forums user named DuoRivians.
For those interested in this upgrade, the Max Pack-equipped R1S has a starting price of $94,000 USD. This price includes 21-inch road wheels and Rivian’s proprietary dual-motor system, which produces 533 horsepower. For those seeking more power, there’s also an option to pair the Max Pack with a Performance dual-motor setup. This variant boosts the horsepower to 665 without any compromise on the estimated range. The performance variant with the Max Pack is priced at $99,000.
However, there’s an optional All-Terrain upgrade available for an additional $3,600. This upgrade, which features 20-inch all-terrain wheels, results in a quite noticeable reduction in the EPA-estimated range, bringing it down to 355 miles for both the standard and performance versions of the R1S. When comparing the new Max Pack with Rivian’s previously offered Large Pack battery, the Max Pack comes at a premium. It is $10,000 pricier but provides an additional 48 miles of range.

Earlier this year, RJ Scaringe, Rivian’s CEO and founder, shared plans about a new Max Pack + Dual-Motor AWD configuration for the R1S. This configuration, boasting a seven-seat capacity, was projected to have a range of 390 miles and was expected to be delivered this fall. Given Rivian’s typical four-month custom order lead time, it remains a question as to whether customers can receive the Max Pack R1S before this fall concludes.
Additionally, Rivian’s R1T online inventory shop now showcases a “Max Pack” filter. This hints at the potential introduction of pickups with this top-tier battery pack. However, as of now, this filter is inactive, suggesting the configurations aren’t available immediately.
