As first reported at the end of February, Rivian is using the best-selling vehicle in North America to secretly test its R1T electric truck.
The Rivian R1T truck has a lot of testing left to do before it arrives on the market sometime in the next year or two. In order to test its new pickup inconspicuously, Rivian has chose to cover mules with the body of the best-selling vehicle in North America, the Ford F-150.
There are apparently a dozen Rivian trucks driving around Detroit covered in an F-150 body. These trucks are often spotted at charging stations and can sometimes be mistaken for an electric Ford F-150.
Rivian founder RJ Scaringe said last month that there was no relationship between Ford and Rivian, and that the F-150 was only used because the wheelbase and size of the F-150 worked with the R1T’s mechanical components.
Using the Ford F-150 body gives Rivian the ability to test its new EV truck without attracting attention. The fact that Ford is also testing electric F-150 units at the same time means it’s not even that odd to see an F-150 connected to a charging station.
A Quick Look at the Rivian R1T
Rivian has been getting a lot of attention recently. A massive investment by Amazon assured the new automaker’s short- and mid-term future, and the initial specs released about the R1T truck are nothing short of amazing.
Four engines developing over 750 horsepower will power the R1T which will be able to tow up to 11,000 pounds. There will be three versions offered with three different batteries ranging from 105 kWh to 180 kWh. Range with the largest batterie is rated at 400 miles.
Rivian has been striving to make its pickup as useful as possible with two storage areas capable of holding 350 liters and 330 liters of cargo space. There’s an additional spot underneath the seats that can hold 95 liters.
Orders are already being taken on the Rivian R1T and all that is needed is a $1,000 deposit. Price is expected to start at $85,000 in Canada.
