Rolls-Royce Unveils the Black Badge Ghost Gamer, a Luxury Sedan Inspired by Retro Gaming

The Rolls-Royce Black Badge Ghost Gamer is a bespoke luxury sedan inspired by the retro gaming culture.

  • This one-of-one Ghost was commissioned by a tech entrepreneur.

  • Alien motifs and arcade-related inscriptions are present throughout.

  • Rolls-Royce designers immersed themselves in retro gaming culture over the course of a month.

The latest creation of Rolls-Royce’s Black Badge program is the Ghost Gamer, a tribute to the early gaming era of the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Commissioned by a tech entrepreneur, this one-of-one Ghost sedan features a large number of personalized touches made to recall early arcade games.

On the outside, the Ghost Gamer is painted Salamanca Blue with a Diamond Black hood and roof. Contrasting with the blue paint is a black hand-painted coachline which features a unique “Cheeky Alien” motif that was designed in collaboration with the client.

On one side of the vehicle, the alien is green and paired with a pink explosion motif, while on the other side, the alien is yellow and the explosion is blue.

The front end is highlighted by an illuminated Pantheon Grille and Spirit of Ecstasy while the side profile features black brake calipers and forged 22-inch 7-spoke Black Badge wheels.

Inside is where most of the unique elements are found. Indeed, the gaming touches are evident as soon as the door is opened, starting with illuminated tread plates that display video game prompts such as “Level Up”, “Press Start”, “Insert Coin” and “Loading…”.

Next are the black and tan seats, which feature both the “Cheeky Alien” on the headrest and 8-bit font inscriptions on the backrest, which read “Player 1” on the driver’s seat, “Player 2” on the passenger seat, as well as “Player 3” and “Player 4” at the rear outboard seating positions.

The famous Rolls-Royce starry headliner has also been modified to display a Pixel Blaster design that features 80 bitmapped battle cruisers, with the “shooting star” effect reprogrammed to look like laser fire.

The dashboard’s illuminated fascia is also made to evoke Laser Base patterns, with an 85-star gunship integrated into a constellation pattern.

Between the rear seats, the “waterfall” is finished in Black Badge technical fiber with a hand-painted lunar scene that took two weeks to create. Hovering above the lunar surface are two stainless-steel flying saucers.

Another nod to the retro games that inspired the Ghost Gamer is the numerous Easter eggs that can be found all around the car. Some examples of this include a metal inlay of the alien motif on the rear picnic tables and an engraved 8-bit motif on the concealed side of the air vents.

To fully understand the aesthetics of early video games and the retro-gaming craze, designers who worked on this project immersed themselves into this universe over the course of a month.

Rolls-Royce says this unique creation shows how its Black Badge program caters to a new generation of collectors who have different interests from its traditional customers.
