Rolls-Royce has built a reputation on pushing the boundaries of its Bespoke division, but the latest creation to emerge from those workshops takes excess to an entirely new level. Dubbed Phantom Hummingbird, this fully bespoke Rolls-Royce was commissioned as a tribute to a client’s wife, orchestrated through the brand’s Private Office in Dubai.
This marks the first Rolls-Royce ever to feature abalone shell marquetry
Each hummingbird depicted on the picnic tables is made up of 53 individual fragments of mother-of-pearl and abalone shell
The project took more than nine months and six failed attempts before craftspeople landed on the right technique
A Temperamental Material
The thinking behind the choice? Capture the iridescent shimmer of a hummingbird’s plumage, one of the most vividly colored birds on the planet. Abalone shell, known for its blue-green glow that shifts depending on the angle of light, was paired with mother-of-pearl to pull off the effect. The catch is that the material is remarkably thin and brittle, giving the brand’s artisans no shortage of headaches.
Once shaped, every fragment of mother-of-pearl and abalone shell was carefully lacquered, balancing the material’s delicate beauty with the longevity expected of a car meant to be handed down through generations.
Each piece starts laser-cut with a 0.06 mm margin, then gets filed by hand until it fits flush against its neighbour with no visible seam. That’s no small feat, especially on the hummingbird’s wings, where only a human hand could achieve the required precision. All told, each of the three decorated surfaces took another eight hours to finish, for a total of 45 hours of work.

A Botanical Touch and a Matching Exterior
A second motif, this one botanical and built from 84 pieces, decorates the rear waterfall panel between the two back seats. It sits on a bed of Ash Burr veneer, complemented by silver birch pulled from a single log, hand-picked for consistent grain.
The cabin carries that theme through with Creme Light leather accented in Moccasin and Tan, Seashell-colored carpets, and a Starlight headliner. Outside, the two-tone body pairs Wildberry with White Sands, split by a hand-painted coachline where a hummingbird takes flight along the car’s entire length.
Excess, you say? This one-off Rolls-Royce is about as good a definition as you’ll find.
