Should You Buy a 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe?

The Jeep Grand Cherokee, a stalwart in the realm of midsize SUVs, has carved out a distinguished place in the automotive world since its inception in the early 1990s. Renowned for blending off-road prowess with urban luxury, the Grand Cherokee has evolved through several generations, each iteration refining its blend of rugged capability and upscale comfort. This vehicle has consistently struck a chord with those seeking a balance between adventurous outdoor activities and the demands of daily driving.

Transitioning through five generations, the Grand Cherokee has partially shed its early reputation for unreliability and high maintenance costs and trading it for being one of the most badass midsize SUVs in North America thanks to the SRT versions including the insane Trackhawk. Now in its fifth generation, the Jeep Grand Cherokee has never more been as luxurious, versatile, and available with a hybrid powertrain.

It is, in part, the advent of 4xe plug-in technology that can be blamed for the demise of the previously beloved 5.7L HEMI V8 engine. As such, is it a worthy replacement for the V8? Let’s look into why or why not you should buy a Grand Cherokee 4xe.

Why You Should Buy a 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe

4xe PHEV Performance:

The Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe is a plug-in hybrid vehicle that is more about performance than outright efficiency. The turbocharged 2.0L 4-cylinder along with the electric motor and large-ish 17 kWh battery, produce a system output 375 hp and a whopping 470 lb.-ft. of torque. The torque figure, by the way, is on par with the previous SRT’s 6.4L V8.

The system is not overly complicated and requires minimal driver involvement, making it an accessible step into electrified vehicles. There are various ways to control the 4xe’s electron reserves enabling some flexibility.

Highly Attractive Styling:

This latest iteration of the Grand Cherokee continues Jeep’s tradition of combining ruggedness with premium aesthetics. The vehicle presents a smoother, more refined look while retaining its iconic Jeep identity. Its design exudes a premium feel, increasing its appeal in the crowded midsize SUV market.

Extremely Luxurious and Spacious Interior:

The Grand Cherokee 4xe’s interior is where luxury meets practicality. The cabin is spacious, with generous legroom and a cargo area amongst the largest in its class. The vehicle’s high-quality materials, fit, and finish, including Napa leather and a Macintosh audio system in higher trims, add to the luxurious experience. Standard features include Uconnect5, a 10.1-inch touchscreen display, a 10.25-inch digital gauge cluster, and leather seats.

Why You Shouldn’t Buy a 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe

Incredibly Expensive

The tested Overland 4xe models came with a hefty price tag, north of $90,000 with options. To step into 4xe territory, one must spend roughly $75,000 which is, in my opinion, insane. This pricing places the Grand Cherokee 4xe at the top end of the non-luxury midsize SUV market, potentially out of reach for many consumers. Both the BMW X5 and Porsche Cayenne are attainable at this price point…

Forward ¾ Quarter Visibility is Bad

One of the drawbacks of the Grand Cherokee is its forward ¾ quarter visibility, hindered by the oversized A-pillars. This design flaw can be a significant concern, especially in urban driving scenarios where visibility is crucial.

The Estimated 42km EV Range is Optimistic

While the advertised 42km EV range is a selling point, it can be overly optimistic, particularly under less-than-ideal conditions. The range is likely to decrease significantly with the use of air conditioning, heating, or winter tires, impacting its effectiveness as a PHEV in varying climates.

Conclusion

Deciding whether to purchase the 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe hinges on weighing its advanced technology, luxurious features, and aesthetic appeal against its high cost and optimistic EV range. It’s a vehicle that continues to hold a special place in the SUV market and in consumer’s hearts with a blend of off-road capability and green technology. However, its price point and what it can be compared to takes the sheen off the Jeep’s traditional seven-slat grille.  For those who value its blend of luxury, technology, and brand heritage, can overlook its shortcomings as the 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe remains a compelling choice.

For the money, I’d slide over to Audi for a Q7 55 TFSI or look into the X5.
