Should You Buy a 2025 Cadillac Optiq?

The 2025 Cadillac Optiq is an affordable, luxurious and stylish fully electric compact crossover. However, the 2025 model may not be as enticing as the 2026 Optiq.

Only a few years ago, Cadillac was planning to go EV-only by 2030, though that strategy has since been shelved as demand for electric vehicles has cooled off considerably in the United States and Canada. Nonetheless, the 2025 Cadillac Optiq hit the market this year, joining the lineup as the brand’s entry-level EV. Through the first nine months of the 2025 calendar year, the Optiq was not only Cadillac’s best-selling model in Canada, but the #2 EV in its segment, though way behind the Tesla Model Y.

For this introductory model year, the Optiq is offered in Luxury 1, Sport 1, Luxury 2 and Sport 2 trim levels, all featuring a standard all-wheel drivetrain, thanks to front and rear electric motors that provide a combined 300 horsepower and 354 pound-feet of torque. Its 85 kWh battery pack allows for a driving range rated at 486 kilometres on a single charge, while the maximum charge speed on a DC fast charger is 150 kW. For plugging in at home, the Optiq is equipped with an 11.5 kW on-board charger while a 19.2 kW charger is optional, if our electric panel can handle that extra load.

The 2025 Cadillac Optiq energy consumption ratings are as follows:

ConfigurationCity/highway/combined (Le/100 km)City/highway/combined (kWh/100 km)Driving Range (km)Level 2 Charge Time (hours)
Optiq with 11.5 kW charger2.1 / 2.5 / 2.318.8 / 22.3 / 20.44869.5
Optiq with 19.2 kW charger2.1 / 2.5 / 2.318.8 / 22.3 / 20.44865.9

During our test of the Optiq Sport 2, we managed a consumption average of 23.3 kWh/100 km, which wasn’t spectacular, but not terrible either. On a DC fast charger, the max speed we witnessed was 115 kW, despite punching in the station as a destination in Google Maps which, according to GM, pre-conditions the battery pack for a quicker charge—at the expense of marginally higher energy consumption.

It’s worth noting that the 2026 Cadillac Optiq is arriving in dealerships, and the crossover is already getting mechanical changes for its second year on the market. While the 2025 model favours the front wheels in normal driving conditions, the 2026 model is available in rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive configurations, with more powerful electric motors and a RWD bias in relaxed driving for the AWD variants. All that was engineered into the Optiq for the introduction of the performance-focused Cadillac Optiq-V. The 2026 model also features GM’s first application of a native NACS (Tesla) charge port.

What’s the difference between the Luxury and Sport trim levels, one may ask? From an equipment standpoint, almost nothing, but they allow buyers to choose either a more traditional appearance with some bright trim on the Luxury variants, or a sportier look with mostly black trim on the Sport variants. Some paint colours are exclusive to one or the other as well.

Standard features include 20-inch alloy wheels, a hands-free power liftgate, LED exterior lighting and an illuminated faux-grille, rain-sensing windshield wipers with heated wiper park, a 33-inch dashboard panel housing the digital driver instrument cluster and the infotainment system touchscreen, a Google built-in interface, a 19-speaker AKG sound system with Dolby Atmos tech, dual-zone climate control, a fixed glass roof, a 360-degree camera system, 126-color ambient lighting, 12-way driver and 10-way passenger power-adjustable front seats with massage function, heated front seats and steering wheel, wireless phone charging and GM’s Super Cruise semi-autonomous driving system.

In addition, no advanced safety feature is left behind, as adaptive cruise control, blind-zone monitoring and steering assist, driver attention assist, emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, automatic high beams, traffic sign recognition and GM’s Safety Alert Seat are all standard issue.

The Luxury 2 and Sport 2 trim levels also benefit from animated exterior lighting, 21-inch wheels, a cargo area cover, head-up display, a 12-way power front passenger seat with two-position memory, ventilated front seats, heated rear outboard seats, a cabin air quality sensor as well as more interior color options with perforated and quilted or embroidered leather upholstery.

In Canada, 2025 Cadillac Optiq pricing ranges from $63,398 to $71,778, which includes freight and delivery charges, the $100 federal A/C tax and $699 in dealer fees, but not dealer-installed accessories. In the United States, the Optiq costs anywhere between $54,390 and $61,595. Luxury-brand EV competition includes the Audi Q4 e-tron, the Genesis GV60, the Lexus RZ, the discontinued-after-2025 Mercedes-Benz EQB, the MINI Countryman SE, the Polestar 2, the Tesla Model Y, the VinFast VF 8 and the Volvo XC40.

Why You Should Buy a 2025 Cadillac Optiq

  • Looks are obviously subjective, but the Optiq stands out in its segment with a resolutely sophisticated and sporty exterior design, while the interior color schemes and finishes are chic. The Optiq’s interior is also trimmed with, according to the brand, yarn made from 100% recycled materials, while the PaperWood veneer is crafted using recycled newspaper and tulip wood. It may be an entry-level Cadillac, but it’s still a stylish and nicely furnished one.
  • There are many more powerful EVs on the market, but the Optiq isn’t about straight-line performance. One thing we like is that the power delivery doesn’t come on as if we were flipping on a light switch, but smoother, so we’re not peeling rubber every time we launch the vehicle from a stoplight. Unless we activate the sport mode, that is.

  • The Optiq’s expansive display is dazzling, with an easy-to-use infotainment system interface and plenty of features. While GM is getting severely criticised for not offering Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration in its more recent EVs, the system itself is pretty slick. We can download apps, such as Waze if that’s our preferred navigation system, and the AKG sound system is pretty good as well.
  • For the price, the Cadillac Optiq offers good value. Even the base trim levels are stuffed with comfort and convenience items that are relegated to option packages in some of its rivals. The Optiq is selling well even though government EV purchase and lease incentives have dried up.

Why You Shouldn’t Buy a 2025 Cadillac Optiq

  • The 2026 model is arriving in dealerships, and it’s more powerful. The RWD variants serve up 315 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque, while the AWD variants benefit from 440 horsepower and 498 pound-feet. And that extra muscle doesn’t come at the expense of energy consumption. And let’s not forget the new-for-2026 Cadillac Optiq-V with its 519-horsepower and 650-pound-foot output, sport suspension and racy appearance.
  • As we’ve mentioned earlier, owners won’t be able to use Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. We think it isn’t all that big of a deal, and Cadillac offers connected services for the first three years of ownership, which includes in-vehicle app use, OnStar and Super Cruise capability. In addition, Tesla doesn’t offer phone projection and they still a ton of vehicles. On the other hand, some consumers might consider this shortcoming as a dealbreaker.

  • There’s a lot of tech packed into new GM vehicles, some of which can improve over time through over-the-air or dealership-installed software updates. However, owners have been reporting inconsistent bug fixes, incomplete OTA updates and the like. In addition, our Optiq tester is equipped with hardware that is currently useless, such as an occupant-facing camera mounted in the roofliner, which would eventually serve to record video inside the vehicle. Simply put, GM vehicle buyers are promised features that take time to arrive, or don’t arrive at all. In comparison, Tesla vehicles are generally trouble-free on the software side of things.
  • Though the Optiq is a stylish little crossover, the front and rear pillars are pretty wide, which cut down on all-around outward visibility. We kinda get used to it, but we must be extra careful when turning on busy street intersections as the pillars could hide a crossing pedestrian. There’s also no rear window wiper, which is unusual for a utility vehicle, and that may also reduce visibility, even though with such a slim window surface, the wiper itself would’ve been small and cover only a portion of the window anyway.

Should You Buy a 2025 Cadillac Optiq?

The Optiq makes a strong first impression. If we’re shopping for a posh electric utility vehicle, the Optiq is well-equipped, reasonably efficient and offers one of the highest driving ranges in its segment. It’s also priced right. And though the 2026 model is more powerful with slightly sharper handling, in addition to getting a NACS charge connector, these attributes may not be something we’re looking for in a vehicle, and we could get end up getting a better deal on a 2025 model that the local dealership needs to clear out.

On the other hand, GM has yet to prove that its software architecture is robust and bug-free. It’s also very early to rate the reliability and long-term durability of the automaker’s EV platform and powertrains, even though they seem to be well-engineered from a performance and handling point of view. The 2026 Optiq may be more enticing at first glance, but the 2025 model is still worth looking at for the overall package.
