The 2026 Chevrolet Trax is the most-affordable new vehicle sold by General Motors on the Canadian market. While being a well-equipped crossover , it does face quite a few low-budget competitors that give it a run for its money.
Inflation, rising fuel costs and escalating insurance premiums are but three reasons why more and more Canadian consumers are scratching new cars off their shopping list and resorting to pre-owned ones. Yet buying a brand-new vehicle, with that new-vehicle scent, as almost always a satisfyingly rewarding experience. In Canada, the 2026 Chevrolet Trax may be GM’s entry-level model, it’s actually the 10th most-affordable new vehicle on the market, with a base price of $29,798.
Which one boasts the lowest price? That would be the Hyundai Venue that starts at $25,098, followed by the Hyundai Elantra, the Kia K4, the Toyota Corolla, the Nissan Sentra, the Mitsubishi RVR, the Mazda3, the Kia Seltos, the Hyundai Kona and, finally, the Trax.
The 2026 Chevrolet Trax is a five-passenger subcompact crossover, offered exclusively with a front-wheel drivetrain, just like the Venue. Almost all other models in that particular segment can be equipped with front-wheel or all-wheel drive.
The Trax is offered in 1RS, LT, 2RS and Activ trim levels. Under the hood, they all feature a turbocharged 1.2L inline-three engine that develops 137 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque, managed by a six-speed automatic transmission. Nothing to write home about, but torque peaks at a low 2,500 rpm, compensating for the modest output and providing adequate straight-line performance.
City/highway/combined fuel economy ratings are pegged at 8.5 / 7.6 / 8.1 L/100 km. During our test of the Trax 1RS, we matched the mixed rating with an average of 8.1 L/100 km.
Standard features on the 2026 Chevrolet Trax include 18-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights and daytime running lights, variable intermittent windshield wipers, heated and power-adjustable outside mirrors, a height-adjustable driver’s seat, heated front seats, a heated and leatherette-wrapped steering wheel, an infotainment system with an eight-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and a four-speaker sound system. The Trax is also equipped with standard safety features such as automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning with lane keep assist, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, rear park assist and automatic high beams.
The LT trim level gets 17-inch alloy wheels, LED signature lights, roof rails, a cargo cover, an intelligent key, automatic climate control, an 11-inch infotainment touchscreen and a six-speaker stereo, while the 2RS adds 19-inch wheels, a front passenger seatback pocket and a ten-way power driver’s seat. The Activ is equipped with 18-inch wheels and pretty much the same content as the 2RS. A power sunroof is a standalone option on the 1RS, and curiously bundled with wireless phone charging on LT, 2RS and Activ variants.
In Canada, 2026 Chevrolet Trax pricing ranges from $29,799 to $34,888, which includes the $2,300 freight and delivery charges, the $100 A/C tax and the $350 dealer fees. In the United States, the Trax is available with a base LS trim level that Canada doesn’t get, and ranges from $23,495 to $30,379.
Subcompact crossover competition includes the Buick Encore GX and Buick Envista, the Chevrolet Trailblazer, the Honda HR-V, the Hyundai Kona and Hyundai Venue, the Kia Niro and Kia Seltos, the Mazda CX-30, the Mitsubishi RVR, the Nissan Kicks, the Subaru Crosstrek, the Toyota Corolla Cross and the Volkswagen Taos. We could also consider compact cars such as the Honda Civic, the Hyundai Elantra, the Kia K4, the Mazda3, the Nissan Sentra, the Subaru Impreza, the Toyota Corolla and the Volkswagen Jetta.
Why You Should Buy a 2026 Chevrolet Trax
- It comes well-equipped even in base form, with a slew of advanced safety features such as blind-spot monitoring and lane keep assist. Usually in small cars, a heated steering wheel is reserved for pricier trim levels, but it’s standard in the Trax.
- For a subcompact vehicle, there’s a lot of rear-seat space, where passengers enjoy lots of room to stretch out their legs. Cargo space isn’t class-leading, but it’s not bad, either.
- GM understands the importance of dashboard ergonomics, and we’re happy that the Trax includes physical climate controls, along with a real volume dial.
- We like the Trax’s exterior design, showing off a little visual toughness that some rivals can’t match, like the Venue, for example. The sportier 1RS and 2RS trim levels look good as well, with their 18- and 19-inch wheels. The Activ should please the outdoorsy folks, though it has no extra trail or off-road capabilities whatsoever.
Why You Shouldn’t Buy a 2026 Chevrolet Trax
- It may be loaded with standard features, but the base eight-inch touchscreen’s resolution isn’t great and isn’t as reactive to finger poking as the uplevel 11-inch screen. The cloth seat material in the base 1RS feels sturdy but abrasive, the climate control rotary dials are stiff and the plastic trim on the bottom of the steering wheel looks low-rent. Closing the doors and operating the door locks are accompanied by some unrefined sounds. It all works, but several cost-cutting measures can easily be found in this entry-level Chevy.
- What is a bigger deal is the Trax’s powertrain refinement. We drove much worse three-cylinder engines over the years, and despite generous low-end torque, the four-cylinder engines found is most rivals are smoother, quieter and more powerful. The Trax isn’t a bore to drive, but it isn’t entertaining, either.
- Fuel economy is decent, but many rivals can do better. The Kona, Venue, Kicks, Corolla Cross and Taos all consume well below 8.0 L/100 km in combined driving, while some competitors equipped with AWD can match the front-wheel-drive Trax’s 8.1 L/100 km rating.
- The Trax’s ride quality isn’t impressive. We can feel every bump and crack in the pavement, and we’re not even talking about the 2RS with its 19-inch wheels and lower-profile tires.
Should You Buy a 2026 Chevrolet Trax?
The Trax can be considered a good sedan replacement for the added versatility of its cargo area, though models like the Civic, Sentra, K4, Impreza and Corolla offer more refined powertrains and generally lower fuel consumption. The Trax also gets many standard features right out of the box.
On the other hand, the Trax could be more engaging to drive, if only because there are grin machines in the subcompact crossover segment, like the CX-30 and the Taos. We’d also like better ride quality, and better fuel economy for the compromise of a three-cylinder engine.
