The 2026 Kia Sportage has a little something for everyone, with a choice of three powertrains, several trim levels and a competitive price.
Many Canadian vehicle shoppers may be feeling the pressure of tightening inventory levels, rising prices and the sky-high cost of fuel, due to world events out of our control. Crossover buyers are looking at hybrid powertrains more than ever, and the 2026 Kia Sportage has two of them on offer.
That’s good for the Korean brand, as the compact crossover segment is chock full of competent vehicles, and proposing fuel-efficient solutions for budget-minded families is obviously a strategic advantage. The competition includes the Chevrolet Equinox, the Ford Bronco Sport, the now-discontinued Ford Escape, the GMC Terrain, the Honda CR-V, the Hyundai Tucson, the Jeep Compass, the Mazda CX-5, the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross and Mitsubishi Outlander, the Nissan Rogue, the Subaru Forester, the Toyota RAV4 and the Volkswagen Tiguan. Six of those are available with a hybrid powertrain, and six can be ordered with a plug-in hybrid system, so there’s definitely a battle to win here.
Through the first quarter of 2026, the Kia Sportage has handled itself pretty well on the sales chart, ranking fifth behind the CR-V, the Tucson, the Rogue and the Tiguan. Sportage sales were up by 51% year-over-year, and it’s currently Kia Canada’s best-selling model.
What explains the crossover’s success? For starters, it received a mid-cycle refresh this year, with revised front and rear styling, paint color swaps, alloy wheel design changes, and an overhauled interior. The dual-screen panel housing the digital driver instrument cluster and infotainment system touchscreen is similar, but updated, while the dual-function panel toggling between audio and climate controls on the centre stack has also been reshaped while conserving the basic button layout. The revised dashboard gets fewer air vents, and there are some trim and interior color changes on the 2026 Kia Sportage as well.
Under the hood, the base 2.5L four-cylinder engine remains, producing 187 horsepower and 178 pound-feet of torque, managed by an eight-speed automatic transmission. Only the base LX trim level can be specified with a front-wheel drivetrain, while AWD is optional in the LX and standard across the rest of the lineup. The 2.5L engine is available in LX, X-Line, EX, EX Premium, and X-Line Limited variants.
Next up is the hybrid powertrain consisting of a turbocharged 1.6L four, accompanied by an electric propulsion motor, a starter generator motor, a 1.49 kWh battery and a six-speed automatic, for a combined output of 232 horsepower and 271 pound-feet. Now we’re talking. The Sportage HEV is available in EX, EX Premium and SX trim levels.
Last but not least, the Sportage’s plug-in hybrid powertrain gets the same gasoline engine and starter generator motor, but a more muscular propulsion motor and a 13.8 kW battery pack, for a combined output of 268 horsepower and 271 pound-feet. The Sportage PHEV is also offered in EX, EX Premium and SX trim levels.
Here are the fuel economy ratings for the 2026 Kia Sportage. We’ll point out there all three powertrains run on regular fuel.
| Engine | City/Highway/Combined (L/100 km) | Combined (Le/100 km) | EV Driving Range (km) |
| 2.5L I4 FWD | 9.3 / 7.0 / 8.3 | – | – |
| 2.5L I4 AWD | 9.9 / 7.8 / 8.9 | – | – |
| Turbo 1.6L I4 HEV AWD | 6.7 / 6.6 / 6.7 | – | – |
| Turbo 1.6L I4 PHEV AWD | 6.7 / 6.4 / 6.6 | 2.8 | 53 |
During our latest winter test of the 2026 Kia Sportage HEV, we managed a decent average of 7.4 L/100 km.
Standard features for the 2026 Kia Sportage LX include 17-inch alloy wheels, LED exterior lighting, roof rails, heated outside mirrors, a smart key, cloth seat upholstery, heated front seats, a height-adjustable driver’s seat, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a 12.3-inch infotainment system touchscreen, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and a six-speaker audio system. There’s also the usual slew of advanced safety systems, such as adaptive cruise control with stop and go, lane keep assist as well as front and rear park sensors.
The X-Line adds 19-inch wheels, black exterior accenting, ladder-type roof rails, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, rear park sonar, remote engine start, wireless phone charging, leatherette seating, a power-adjustable driver’s seat with lumbar support and a heated steering wheel. The EX variants get 17-inch (HEV), 18-inch (gas) and 19-inch (PHEV) wheels, rain-sensing windshield wipers, a heated windshield, navigation, HomeLink, LED interior lighting and dual-zone climate control.
The EX Premium trims move up to 19-inch wheels (18s on HEV and PHEV), power-folding mirrors, a power liftgate, a power front passenger seat, ventilated front seats and heated rear seats. A panoramic sunroof is included in the regular Sportage EX and in the EX Premium for the HEV and PHEV variants.
Meanwhile, the X-Line Limited gets the same exterior appearance as the X-Line, while adding surround park distance warning, a surround view camera system, a Harman/Kardon premium sound system, a 12.3-inch digital driver instrument cluster, head-up display and a digital key. Lastly, the SX benefits from automatic reverse braking, blind-view monitoring and remote smart park assist.
In Canada, 2026 Kia Sportage pricing ranges from $35,144 to $56,094, which includes $2,150 freight and delivery charges, the $100 A/C tax and $599 in dealer fees. In the United States, the Sportage is priced between $30,285 and $49,180.
Why You Should Buy a 2026 Kia Sportage
- The Sportage lineup offers plenty of choices, from basic to rugged for its appearance, and there’s a full array of comfort and convenience features as well. Dashboard ergonomics are pretty good, expect for one aspect we’ll talk about below.
- The two hybrid powertrains may be not be class-leading in terms of fuel economy, but they’re still pretty efficient. With the Ford Escape now off the market, the Sportage becomes the most-affordable PHEV in its segment ahead of the Tucson, Rogue, Outlander and RAV4.
- The Kia Sportage offers one of the biggest cargo areas in its class, right up there with its Tucson cousin, the Outlander, the CR-V and the Forester.
- It’s pretty fun to drive, as far as compact crossovers go. There’s plenty of power with the hybrid powertrains, ride quality is good, and the cabin is fairly well insulated. A nice place to spend time in.
Why You Shouldn’t Buy a 2026 Kia Sportage
- The seats are firm. Maybe a little too firm for some shoppers, so it’s best to try them out before signing the contract.
- While the hybrid powertrains are fuel-efficient, the base 2.5L engine isn’t the most frugal among non-hybrid engines in the compact segment, especially when matched with AWD. That said, its combined rating improved from 9.4 to 8.9 L/100 km for the 2026 model year.
- As we said above, we like the Sportage’s dashboard ergonomics, but the touch-sensitive panel that toggles between audio and climate controls just doesn’t do it for us. It’s not that reactive and distracting to use while driving. While we’re complaining, the oval-shaped steering wheel takes some getting used to.
- The Sportage’s 11.8-metre turning circle is relatively large, which can complicate parking manoeuvres at the shopping mall. At least when compared to most other compact crossovers.
Should You Buy a 2026 Kia Sportage?
Choosing the right compact crossover isn’t always easy, as it all depends on our budget and needs. However, the Sportage makes the decision a little easier with a wide range to choose from, at competitive prices to boot. The crossover drives well, interior space is plentiful, and hauling the family could hardly be easier.
On the other hand, Sportage variants equipped with the base engine aren’t the most entertaining or the most fuel-efficient. In addition, the dual-function dashboard control panel isn’t to our liking, and consumers who prefer spongy, supportive seats might not like the ones in the Kia. If the $5,000 difference between the HEV and PHEV variants seems too high, we think the EX Premium hybrid is a sweet spot for its mix of affordability, power, fuel economy and feature list.
