The 2026 Nissan Sentra may not be the most rewarding compact car on the market, but it more than makes up for in value, fuel economy and ride comfort.
The most-affordable new cars on the market right now are mostly compact sedans, despite them seeing their prices increase significantly in the past five years. The 2026 Nissan Sentra is one of them, and now represents the brand’s entry-level model.
The ninth-generation Sentra rides on the same platform as the previous gen, as well as the same basic structure, but most body panels have been redesigned, at least to be considered an “all-new” car. Exterior dimensions are identical, give or take a few millimetres, as are interior measurements, including trunk space.
In addition to the more eye-catching exterior design and revised color palette, the Sentra’s cabin has been revamped with more angular shapes, an optional display panel housing both the driver instrument panel and the infotainment system screen, a new two-spoke steering wheel, along with different textures and materials. All trim levels now include more advanced safety features, such as adaptive cruise control and blind-spot monitoring, while the ProPILOT Assist semi-autonomous driving system makes its introduction in the compact car, as an option.
Under the hood, the 2026 Nissan Sentra gets no mechanical changes. It’s still equipped with a naturally aspirated 2.0L inline-four engine that develops 149 horsepower and 146 pound-feet of torque, managed by a continuously variable automatic transmission that feeds power to the front wheels. A manual transmission was available in previous model years, but it has been retired for 2026.

On paper, the previous-generation car was more efficient with a combined average of 6.6 to 6.9 L/100 km with the automatic transmission. Nevertheless, during our test of the loaded Sentra SR Premium, we managed an excellent average of 6.0 L/100 km, beating the combined rating by a notable margin, and proving that hybrid powertrains aren’t always required in small cars.
Standard features aboard the 2026 Nissan Sentra S include 16-inch steel wheels with covers, LED exterior lighting, heated and power-adjustable mirrors, a height-adjustable driver’s seat, cloth seat upholstery, heated front seats, a seven-inch digital driver instrument cluster, a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and a four-speaker audio system. Adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane departure warning and lane keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, driver distraction detection and auto high beams are all standard as well.
The SV trim adds 16-inch alloy wheels, a power sunroof, automatic climate control, a smart key with remote engine start, upgraded cloth seat upholstery, a heated and wrapped steering wheel and a 12.3-inch digital driver instrument cluster. The SV Premium also gets mirrors with turn signal indicators, illuminated vanity mirrors, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, ambient lighting, proximity lock and unlock, a six-speaker stereo and wireless phone charging.
The Sentra SR upgrades to 18-inch wheels, LED signature headlights, a rear spoiler, side skirts, a sport rear bumper, a chrome exhaust tip, dual-zone climate control and a fold-down rear centre armrest, while the range-topping SR Premium benefits from rear automatic emergency braking, a surround-view camera system, rear park sonar, ProPILOT Assist, a ten-way power driver’s seat, synthetic leather upholstery and an eight-speaker Bose sound system.
In Canada 2026 Nissan Sentra pricing ranges from $27,839 to $36,964, including the $1,850 freight and delivery charge, the $100 A/C tax and the $621 dealer fees. In the United States, the Sentra is priced from $23,845 to $30,795. Compact sedan competition includes the Honda Civic, the Hyundai Elantra, the Kia K4, the Mazda3, the Subaru Impreza, the Toyota Corolla and the Volkswagen Jetta. We could also consider the fully electric Kia EV4 and the Tesla Model 3.
Why You Should Buy a 2026 Nissan Sentra
- The Sentra is the 5th most-affordable new vehicle in Canada right now. That in itself is a major plus for budget-constrained shoppers. For that price, we get heated seats, a big infotainment screen and a slew of safety features. The next-up SV adds several extra comfort and convenience items for just under $30k. Simply put, there’s good value here.
- The sedan’s cabin is well-insulated against road noise. We’ll hear suspension and tire noise only on really badly maintained roads. Since we’re on the subject of driving, the Sentra’s turning diameter was considerably reduced, from 11.6 to 10.6 metres curb to curb—making parking manoeuvres much easier.
- The Sentra’s seats are rather comfortable, even on lengthier road trips. They also look pretty good in the SR Premium we tested.
- Fuel economy is great. During our test, with a little eco-driving, we came close to matching the consumption averages we observed in the Civic Hybrid, Corolla Hybrid and Elantra Hybrid.
Why You Shouldn’t Buy a 2026 Nissan Sentra
- The Sentra may look sporty, especially in SR and SR Premium trim, but it’s mostly in appearance. Quite a few rivals are more engaging to drive, such as the Mazda3, the Impreza and the Jetta. The Nissan is more about ride comfort than driving dynamics, if that’s something we’re looking for.
- The thick front pillars, combined with the low roofline and steeply raked windshield, cut down on overall frontward visibility. We must be sure no one’s crossing the street when we turning on busy intersections.
- On all trim levels except the base Sentra S, the climate control interface uses touch-sensitive buttons on a one-piece panel that’s a hassle to use, especially while driving. It’s just as distracting as touchscreen buttons. The previous-generation presented a mix of rotary dials and hard buttons on the centre stack, and that worked very well. Once again, form overtakes function.
- While the cabin is fairly spacious for a compact sedan, headroom is among the worst due to the low roofline. Front-seat legroom is generous, but rear-seat legroom is below average. While we’re at it, there are no centre console rear-seat air vents, adjustable or otherwise, so occupants back there might not feel very comfy on very hot or very cold days, and their seatback angle isn’t adjustable either.
Should You Buy a 2026 Nissan Sentra?
Like its predecessor, the new Sentra looks like a dynamic performer, but it’s more focused on comfort, refinement and fuel economy, offered at a very competitive price. It’s not thrilling to drive, nor is it a bore either.
On the other hand, some hybrid-engined rivals are ultimately more frugal at the pump, some are more powerful and amusing to drive, and some boast more spacious cabins with better outward visibility. In a nutshell, the Sentra doesn’t clear stand out in its segment in any way, but will certainly satisfy the needs of most compact-car shoppers.
