The three-row crossover segment is chock full of interesting models, one of them being the 2026 Volkswagen Atlas. For its final model year before the second-generation arrives, is the Atlas a sound purchase? Let’s check it out.
Not too big, not too small. That’s a typical way to qualify midsize three-row crossovers such as the 2026 Volkswagen Atlas, a category offering a great selection for parents who don’t want to be seen piloting a minivan. The Atlas was designed with the North American market in mind, built in the USA, and since its introduction for the 2018 model year, consumers have responded with strong sales.
In Canada, the Atlas ranked third in its category with 13,491 sales during the 2021 calendar year, its best year ever. It also ranked second in 2024 with 10,637 deliveries. However, sales were down 29 percent in 2025.
As one would expect, there are no significant changes for the 2026 Volkswagen Atlas. It’s still offered in Comfortline, Peak Edition, Highline and Execline trim levels, all equipped with a turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder engine that develops 269 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque, managed by an eight-speed automatic transmission. 4MOTION all-wheel drive is standard in Canada, and for those wondering where the V6 engine went, it was discontinued after the 2023 model year, with the 2.0L engine getting a healthy output boost and its 5,000-pound or 2,268 kg towing capacity matching that of the old 3.6L engine.
As for fuel consumption, ratings are as follows:

The Atlas can run on regular 87-octane fuel. During our winter test aboard three-row VW, we managed a decent average of 11.1 L/100 km.
Standard features in the 2026 Volkswagen Atlas include 18-inch alloy wheels, roof rails, LED exterior lighting, heated outside mirrors, rain-sensing windshield wipers with heated washer nozzles, front and rear park sonar, an intelligent key with remote engine start, a 10.25-inch fully digital driver instrument cluster, an infotainment system with 12-inch touchscreen and wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, wireless phone charging, heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, leatherette seat upholstery, a 12-way power driver’s seat, a height-adjustable front passenger seat as well as a full suite of advanced safety features.
The Peak Edition adds appearance touches such as illuminated emblems, black-painted wheels, aluminum door scuff plates and stainless steel pedals as well as a cargo cover, footwell lighting, 30-colour ambient lighting and rear-door manual sunshades. The Highline gets 20-inch wheels, a power panoramic sunroof, power-folding mirrors, a surround-view camera system, a 10-speaker Harman/Kardon sound system, navigation, leather upholstery, an eight-way power front passenger seat and heated second-row seats. The Execline upgrades to 21-inch wheels, an R-Line exterior appearance package, Park Assist, head-up display, massaging front seats, more front-seat power lumber support adjustments and premium leather seating.
A second-row bench seat for seven-passenger seating is standard in all four trim levels, while captain’s chairs are optional in the Highline and Execline variants for a capacity of six passengers.
In Canada, 2026 Volkswagen Atlas pricing ranges from $54,445 to $65,145, including $2,250 freight and delivery charges, $100 A/C tax and $500 dealer fees. In the United States, the Atlas is priced from $40,785 to $56,800. Competition includes the Chevrolet Traverse, the Dodge Durango, the Ford Explorer, the GMC Acadia, the Honda Pilot, the Hyundai Palisade, the Kia Telluride, the Mazda CX-90, the Nissan Pathfinder, the Toyota Highlander and the Toyota Grand Highlander.
Why You Should Buy a 2026 Volkswagen Atlas
- It may not be the biggest or roomiest in the three-row crossover segment, the Atlas offers above-average space for the family. There’s adequate room in the third row for adults as well. Cargo volume also ranks among the best, notably surpassed by the Pilot.
- The first-gen Atlas is getting old, yet remains quite attractive. It’s not the most flamboyant vehicle in its segment, but the automaker’s designers did a good job of creating a crossover that stands the test of time. Interior fit and finish has also improved nicely over the years, and notably so with the 2024 model-year refresh.
- The V6 engine’s sound and refinement are gone, but the 2.0L motor has no problem getting the vehicle up to speed without feeling strained. As a bonus, the Atlas’ all-important 5,000-pound tow capacity is preserved.
- The VW’s base price is in line with those of its main rivals, so that’s good. As a bonus, it offers a long list of standard features, including niceties rarely found in base trim levels, such as a heated steering wheel, rain-sensing wipers, park sonar, and ventilated seats.
Why You Shouldn’t Buy a 2026 Volkswagen Atlas
- For obvious reasons, fuel prices have increased sharply this year, and although the Atlas isn’t a gas hog, there are several more-efficient choices in the midsize three-row category. The Palisade, 2027 Telluride, CX-90, Highlander and Grand Highlander are available with hybrid powertrains, the VW doesn’t.
- The Atlas’s powertrain isn’t the smoothest out there. The transmission’s one-two shift is harsh, and so is the automatic stop-start system when it fires the engine back up. Handling is good, but ride quality suffers a little with the Execline’s 21-inch wheels wrapped in low-profile 265/45R21 tires.
- We like the interior design and build quality. However, piano black trim is a trend we don’t generally like as it attracts dust like a magnet, while scuffs and scratches occur too easily on this type of surface, and become easily apparent.
- The Atlas’ climate controls have been almost entirely relegated to the touchscreen, which is distracting to use while driving. Setting cabin temperature and adjusting audio volume are performed on small, thin surfaces on which we can slide or tap our fingertip, not nearly as convenient as good old rotary dials. And where are the defrost switches? There on the dashboard to the left of the steering column, far away from the rest of the climate controls—and we still can’t figure out why.
Should You Buy a 2026 Volkswagen Atlas?
It would be easy to dismiss the Atlas simply by age, after nine years on the market in its current form. However, the crossover has aged well, and still serves its purpose as a spacious and user-friendly family hauler.
On the other hand, it has some ergonomic flaws we hope will be corrected with the second-gen Atlas comes around, and the lack of a hybrid powertrain disadvantages it compared to some more-efficient rivals. Nonetheless, the Atlas offers a good amount of features and good looks at a decent price.
