Sony is looking to become a player in the electric vehicle segment
The latest EV concept from Sony, the Vision-S 02, showcases the company’s impressive safety and connectivity technology
Sony (yes, the electronics company) unveiled its second electric vehicle yesterday at the Consumer Electronics Show, two years after the presentation of Sony’s very first electric car at the same event.
This time it’s the Vision-S 02 sport utility vehicle, an SUV concept offering space for 7 passengers and some pretty advanced technology. An integrated 5G network allows for over-the-air updates to all functions and the infotainment system in addition to allowing for several remote operations.
The Sony electric SUV is mostly a glimpse into the technologies Sony is working on for the automotive industry. The Vision-S 02 concept features seat-mounted speakers that are compatible with 360 Reality Audio. The Vision-S 02 also allows rear seat passengers to play Playstation on the rear screens.
In terms of safety, the Sony EV offers a host of sensors all around the body for a 360-degree view and a LiDAR system. The model also offers Level 2 autonomous driving technologies.
The powertrain has two electric motors that develop 400 kW, or 536 horsepower. The size of the battery has not been announced nor the range. Sony said in the past it didn’t have any plans to sell its first EV sedan, so we’ll have to see what the game plan is for this latest SUV concept.
In reality, the Sony Vision-S 02 concept is mainly intended to confirm Sony’s intentions to enter the world of electric vehicles by focusing on technology. This is great news for the future of the segment.
