Start your Hyundai with your fingerprint

Hyundai has unveiled a new technology that allows you to unlock and start your vehicle using your fingerprint.

The 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe will be the Korean manufacturer’s first model that can be equipped with this technology since the popular SUV will arrive in certain markets in the first quarter of 2019.

Hyundai says this “world’s first smart fingerprint technology” will unlock your car by placing your finger on the sensor on the door handle. In the same way, by placing your finger on the start button, the driver will be able to start the vehicle.

How does this technology work? According to the manufacturer, the encrypted fingerprint information is identified and transmitted to the fingerprint controller inside the vehicle, which subsequently allows the functions mentioned above in addition to personal adjustments related to the fingerprint detected.

In fact, the vehicle will make the adjustment of seats, mirrors and other customizable settings according to the preferences of the driver. But Hyundai does not want to stop there.

Albert Biermann, President and Head of Research & Development Division of the Hyundai Motor Company, says “In the future, Hyundai Motor plans to further expand the application of the technology to allow the adjustment of temperature, steering wheel position, and many other features which will be tailored to driver’s preferences. This will ultimately offer quality driving experience to each and every Hyundai customer. ”

As for the safety of this new technology, I will let the manufacturer answer it.

“With capacitance recognition, which detects differentials in the electricity level in various parts of the fingertip, the fingerprint technology efficiently prevents forgeries and faked fingerprints. The technology’s chance of misrecognizing another person’s fingerprint as the driver’s is only 1 in 50,000 making it five times more effective than conventional vehicle keys, including smart keys. Moreover, through real-time learning of fingerprints supported by ‘dynamic update’ system, the fingerprint system can continually improve its success rate. ”
