Mercedes-Benz is recommending that impacted owners stop driving their vehicles.
Benz will offer free towing to service centers.
Affected vehicles include 2006-2012 ML, GL, and R-Class vehicles.
This recall should be taken seriously. Many times, safety recalls involving benign items however this time, Mercedes-Benz is recalling more than 292,000 of its vehicles and warning owners not to drive them because it might not stop.
The issue stems from a corroded brake booster housing. Over time, moisture may have infiltrated the booster housing and created a vacuum leak. This leak can cause a loss of braking power. In some rare cases, hard or emergency braking could cause enough damage to the booster to make it impossible for the vehicle to stop. To note, the foot-activated foot brake remains functional.
According to the Associated Press, the following vehicles are affected by the recall: ML, GL, and R-Class vehicles from the 2006 to 2012 model years inclusively.
Mercedes-Benz will offer free towing to owners from their homes to local service centers. Should it not be possible to complete the repair immediately, Mercedes-Benz will provide loaner cars to owners.
Affected Mercedes-Benz owners will begin being notified by letter starting on May 27th.
