Subaru BRZ and Toyota GR86 Getting GR Yaris Power: Report

Fast GR86/BRZ twins finally coming?

  • GR Yaris power plus hybrid assist for next-gen sports cars

  • Next-gen cars could move to a new Lexus platform

Thought a turbocharged Subaru BRZ would never arrive? A new report from Japan says that there’s one coming, though the powertrain it claims is not something we’d have ever expected.

BestCarWeb reports that there will be a turbocharged version of the Subaru BRZ and the Toyota GR86. They’ll be packing more than 300 horses if the report is to be believed.

The catch? It’s going to be a 1.6L hybrid system.

Toyobaru is planning on using the 1.6L three-cylinder turbo from the Toyota GR Yaris and GR Corolla in the car, it says. Combined with a two-clutch one-motor hybrid system to help lower emissions and even improve performance.

Can the Subaru chassis hold an inline engine instead of a flat-four? The report says that the new GR86 and BRZ will also be on a new platform. An architecture shared with the Lexus IS.

Highly speculative renderings from the site show a car that looks much like the current model but with head and taillights clearly borrowed from the latest Prius. Which for the first time actually looks pretty good.

BestCarWeb says that the debut of the new model is expected for 2025. That’s not long after the current model debuted, but since that one was more of a big refresh it might make the budget easier for the two to stick to.

Of course there’s nothing official yet, but that won’t stop us from salivating.
