The 12-second clip includes a vehicle bearing an STI badge on the front grille and a matching STI plate cover. The car is shown driving aggressively over snow-covered roads, accompanied by what could sound like a flat-four engine, albeit with a far too tinny rumble. Hybrid maybe? A brief aerial shot suggests the vehicle is a tuned variant of the current WRX.

The teaser ends with a simple “coming soon” message, alongside the January 9 announcement date. While Subaru has not explicitly confirmed what will be revealed, the teaser is a logical follow-up to recent brand activity related to its STI sub-brand.
At the Japan Mobility Show in October 2025, Subaru debuted two STI-badged concepts, including the Performance-B STI Concept, which appeared to carry production-ready styling. Following the event, a Subaru executive publicly acknowledged that the company was gathering customer feedback on future performance models.

Subaru last sold an STI-branded model in 2021 before discontinuing the model line with the introduction of the VB-generation WRX. Since then, the automaker has hinted at a potential return for the nameplate, including as an EV, some two and a half years ago, but has offered no definitive timelines.
Details about the vehicle shown in the teaser, including specifications and market availability, remain unconfirmed. It is also unclear whether the model will be released globally or targeted to specific markets such as Japan or North America. One thing that seems clear from the teaser is that this STI will not be a hatchback, given the size of the rear glass surface from the aerial shot.
More information is expected during the January 9 reveal.
