Rumours mentioning the arrival of the Subaru WRX STI S209 on North American soil are no longer, well, rumours. The manufacturer will unveil the variant of the STI at the Detroit Auto Show.
After the recent filing with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) of the S209 nomenclature, everything indicated that this special version would land here, in North America.
It was confirmed by Subaru and its Subaru Tecnica International (STI) division in a very brief press release. They only mentioned the model will be unveiled on January 14th at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
The S209 will be Subaru’s first “S” vehicle sold outside of Japan. Always sold in limited numbers since the S201, we imagine the tradition will continue with the most recent version. For example, the S208, unveiled in 2017 at the Tokyo Motor Show, was produced in only 450 units.
The Subaru WRX STI S209 can be expected to have an increase in power compared to the current STI. The latter is currently powered by a 2.5-litre 4-cylinder turbo engine developing 310 hp and 290 lb-ft of torque.
Subaru Tecnica International President Yoshio Hirakawa will be there to reveal “something special“.
