This takes car cloning to a whole new level
Czech owner even replicated center-seat driving
The McLaren F1 is an absolutely epic supercar. Holding the record as the fastest production car in the world for what felt like a generation, winning at Le Mans, and getting gold leaf trimming the engine bay. It had celebrity owners like Rowan Atkinson, Jay Leno, and even a pre-Tesla Elon Musk.
The problem is that they sell for 10s of millions of dollars, and the company only built 64. That makes it tough to find one for sale, even if you do have the scratch.
The solution? How about building your own, center-mounted driving seat and all. It’s based on a Porsche Boxster, and it is shockingly convincing. At least in photos from the car’s for sale listing.
It was built starting with a 2001 version of the Boxster, made by an extremely ambitious owner in the Czech Republic. The car (via CarThrottle) is currently for sale on eBay, and at the time of this writing has a starting bid of £51,000, or just over $88,000 Canadian, with two days remaining.
Unless you’re lining up this car and a real one, you might not notice the differences. The central driving position is one of the keys to making this convincing, and probably the most work. The seller even reports it has all three seats, though we have no idea how they made it work.
There is little detail in the ad, though the seller says it comes with “complete technical documentation” of the conversion. It also has a hydraulic front lift for making it over speed bumps.
It’s a far cry from the days of the Fiero Ferrari but is this Boxster F1 appealing, orange you glad you stayed away?
