Volvo’s Canadian division has just announced that it will not offer its EX90 electric SUV in Canada in 2026 due to counter-tariffs imposed by Canada on United States-made vehicles, all within the framework of the trade war launched earlier this year by American President Donald Trump.
The company just launched the Volvo EX90
The vehicle is manufactured in South Carolina
So far this year, Volvo has sold 143 EX90s in Canada
The model thus becomes the latest victim of this pointless conflict initiated by the White House tenant. BMW, Hyundai, Mazda, and Nissan have also had to interrupt Canadian deliveries of vehicles they build south of the 49th parallel.
If there’s any good news for Volvo, it’s that, with 143 units sold since the beginning of 2025, we’re not talking about a product that’s a game-changer for the company’s profits in the country. The EX90 accounts for 1% of the company’s sales in Canada.
Still, something about all this is frustrating.
Volvo Says Upcoming EX60 will be Priced Like a PHEV, and Profitable
Let’s recall that Canada is imposing 25% customs duties on vehicles manufactured in the United States and imported into Canada, a retaliatory measure in response to the 25% tariff imposed on models built in Canada and destined for the American market.
Nobody wins.
The 2025 Volvo EX90’s starting price in the country is $113,770 CAD. It’s already too expensive, so with a price increase due to tariffs, well, you get the picture.
One can only hope that normalcy will one day return regarding relations between the United States and Canada, but all of this will leave scars, if only in the eyes of consumers.
