Tesla, and Musk, continue to push the full-autonomous driving (aka Level 5 autonomy) envelope as they believe that the technology will sooner rather than later become part of our daily lives. Musk plans to launch the tech as early as late 2021.
In a conversation during an awards presentation, as reported by Tesla North, Musk said that regulatory approval will set back introduction dates especially in regions such as Europe given that regulators there are quite conservative.
By his estimate, the vast majority of new cars sold in ten years from now will feature the technology, and that most will be all-electric. Given the typical car fleet turnover, 20 years from now, non-autonomous petrol-powered vehicles will be extremely rare.
At the moment, Tesla is testing full self-driving in beta in the US only. Last month, Musk said that he hoped to launch in Canada this month.
The interview is fairly long however if your interests also include space, it could be worth your time.
