The Tesla Model 3 outsold every other car in California in Q1, 2020
The Model 3 was followed by the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla
It’s the first time an electric vehicle has topped the best-selling list in California
The Tesla Model 3 is the best-selling car in California for the first quarter of 2020, outperforming traditional sales kings like the Honda Civic and the Toyota Corolla. The data was released on Monday by the California New Car Dealers Association.
This marks the first time an electric vehicle has topped the sales charts anywhere in the United States. The Tesla Model 3 was up 9.3 percent over Q1 2019 and increased its market share in the state from 4.0 percent to 4.6 percent. As for the rest of the country, the Model 3 outsold all other plug-in electrified vehicles combined as well as luxury compact sedans like the BMW 3 Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, and Audi A4.
There were 18,856 Model 3 units registered in California during the first three months of the year.
This comes at a time when the overall California market fell 4.3 percent in Q1 2020. The market is expected to drop even more drastically in Q2 as the COVID-19 pandemic has forced possible buyers to stay home and dealerships to close.
Still, all signs point to electric vehicles doing better than traditional vehicles during the current pandemic. EV sales in Europe increased by over 50 percent to start the year even if the overall market has been down.
We can’t wait to see how Tesla and every other brand fared in the second quarter of what has been a very unusual 2020 to say the least.
