
Launched in Canada in late 2020, the first-generation Tesla Model Y became one of the best-selling all-electric SUVs, thanks to strong energy efficiency and a spacious cabin. Its recall record, however, remains heavy: Transport Canada has logged at least 15 campaigns affecting the Model Y.
- Heat pump / heating (2020–2022) — recall TC 2022043; winter complaints; a Quebec class action alleged in 2026, not yet adjudicated.
- Electric power steering, EPAS (2023) — recall TC 2025034; risk of assist loss; 38,601 multi-model units in Canada.
- ADAS (advanced driver-assistance systems) / phantom braking (multiple model years) — high volume of NHTSA complaints (U.S.); investigation PE22002 closed without a recall.

Tech Briefing
Three trim families coexisted at Canadian dealers, each with its own battery chemistry:

The distinction matters for maintenance: an LFP battery tolerates — and even benefits from — a full charge to 100% at least once a week, while an NMC (Nickel-Manganese-Cobalt) battery should generally be kept to 80–90% for daily use. A used-car buyer should confirm the exact chemistry of their unit — via the VIN or the vehicle’s Battery menu — before adopting the right charging habits.

Tesla also practices what the industry calls “running changes”: mid-model-year production changes made without any change to the commercial designation. In practice, two Model Y units of the same model year can carry different hardware depending on their build date — a detail that’s mostly verifiable through the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), rarely through the published spec sheet.
Battery chemistry is just one example: two other changes go just as unnoticed. The driver-assistance computer moves from Hardware 3 to Hardware 4 around late May 2023 — a shift never officially confirmed by Tesla, but established through community tracking of serial numbers — recognizable by the dual-lens front camera with red lenses on HW4.
Then, starting October 4, 2022, ultrasonic parking sensors give way to camera-based detection (“Tesla Vision”): early deliveries without sensors temporarily lost the distance display and the Autopark and Summon functions, restored via a software update in November-December 2022 — a unit built in that window could therefore have gone without these aids for several weeks.
The body structure evolved too: an aluminum rear gigacasting has equipped the Model Y since its earliest days, and Austin adds a structural 4680-cell battery pack starting in April 2022 — that variant was never sold in Canada.
On the body side, the first generation covered by this report ends with the arrival of the Model Y Juniper (Tesla’s internal code name): the new body was confirmed in production at all four Tesla plants around late January or early February 2025, marking the practical end point of the generation covered here.

Most Common Problems
Driver-Assistance Systems and Emergency Braking
On the U.S. market, NHTSA complaint aggregators log a very high volume of reports tied to forward emergency braking (Forward Collision Avoidance) and so-called “phantom” braking — on the order of several thousand complaints for the Model Y, according to third-party compilations as of mid-2026. These figures apply to the United States only; they don’t automatically translate into a Canadian recall. The U.S. investigation PE22002 was, in fact, closed without a recall campaign.
In Canada, Transport Canada has mandated major software fixes tied to Autosteer and Full Self-Driving: notably recall TC 2023657 (roughly 192,769 multi-model vehicles) and TC 2023063 (roughly 20,667 units).

Heat Pump, Heating and Defogging
In early 2022, Transport Canada received more than 170 complaints — mostly from Quebec — about cabin heating and windshield defogging in cold weather. Recall TC 2022043 (NHTSA equivalent 22V050) targets a heat-pump malfunction that can limit winter comfort and visibility; about 2,084 multi-model vehicles are listed in Canada under this campaign. Some owners report out-of-warranty repairs in the range of $3,800 to $4,700; a Quebec class action reported in 2026 remains alleged and unadjudicated. This one carries real weight: road salt and deep cold put real strain on the thermal system, and winter range loss is often cited at 30% to over 50% depending on use.

Electric Power Steering (EPAS)
Recall TC 2025034 (NHTSA 25V092) affects 2023 Model Y units among other Teslas: a power-steering component can lead to a loss of assist, making the wheel heavier to turn. About 38,601 vehicles are affected in Canada, across all models in the campaign. Tesla rolled out an over-the-air software update; no further action is required if the vehicle shows version 2023.38.4 or later. It’s still worth cross-checking the status against the VIN before buying.
Hood, Backup Camera and Other Campaigns
Recall TC 2024427 (NHTSA 24V554) targets a hood latch across a very large multi-model fleet (about 179,752 units in Canada). The backup camera has been the subject of several campaigns (TC 2024027, 2025002, 2026221). Among others, TC 2022037, 2022651, 2023099 (including 71 Model Y units in Canada), 2024130 and 2024298 add to the list. In total, the Model Y appears in at least fifteen validated Transport Canada campaigns for the period, several shared with the Model 3, S or X. A more recent recall (TC 2026239) mainly targets 2025–2026 models and can overlap with the Juniper: the VIN, not the model year alone, should be confirmed.

12V Battery and Build Quality
Forums report failures of the 12V auxiliary battery (warning messages, immobilization). Build quality on early Fremont-built units (2020–early 2022) is more often criticized than that of Shanghai-built units from 2023 on. Not all of these are recall-related, but they’re worth a close inspection.
What Owners Say
Day to day, many Quebec owners praise the all-wheel grip on snow, the available torque and the low energy cost. Software updates also help sustain that “new car” feeling, and units assembled in Shanghai from 2023 onward are often rated as better finished.
Real-world winter range disappoints frequently without preconditioning, though. Tesla’s service network can involve delays, and insurance remains pricier than for a comparable gas-powered SUV. Unwanted emergency braking events, suspension noise and assembly details (panel gaps, seals) come up repeatedly in owner accounts, especially on early model years. The dealership/service experience is described as polarized: efficient for over-the-air recalls, more frustrating for body parts or lengthy diagnostics.

Bottom Line
The Model Y is best read through model year, assembly plant and recall history first — without confusing the original body style with the Juniper that arrived in 2025.
2020–2021. Confirm the suspension control-arm bolt recall (TC 2021649) and the heat-pump campaign (TC 2022043), then have suspension, the 12V battery and Fremont build quality inspected.
2022. Prioritize the heat pump (TC 2022043) and the already-applied Autosteer fixes (notably TC 2023063 and TC 2023657); for a unit built between October and December 2022, also verify that parking functions (distance display, Autopark, Summon) work normally — the window for removing ultrasonic sensors lines up exactly with that period.
2023. Demand proof of the power-steering recall (TC 2025034), check for Hardware 3 or 4 (the transition happened around late May at Fremont, less certain elsewhere), inspect the backup camera and hood (TC 2024027, TC 2024427, etc.), and — for an Austin-built unit — rely on the VIN to determine whether it has a structural 4680 pack or a conventional 2170 pack, two very different reliability profiles.
2024. Generally fewer “growing pains”: Shanghai-built units tend to be better finished, but camera/hood campaigns and ADAS software still need to be checked, along with the 12V battery’s condition.
2025. Be sure to tell original-body and Juniper models apart (VIN, appearance, Tesla’s build sheet — keep in mind the body transition began at all four plants in early 2025) and confirm any open recall, including recent multi-model-year camera campaigns (TC 2025002, TC 2026221) and TC 2026239, which can apply to 2025–2026 depending on configuration.

A common thread runs through the entire first generation: Tesla regularly makes mid-model-year production changes — battery chemistry, the driver-assistance computer, parking sensors, structural castings — without announcing them. Two units of the same model year can therefore differ materially depending on build date; the VIN, rather than the model year alone, remains the reliable starting point for knowing what a specific Model Y actually contains.
In every case, check the VIN on Transport Canada’s recall tool and Tesla’s own recall lookup before taking delivery.
