Tesla Tests “Unboxed” Factory Model with New Autonomous Cybercab as the First Units are Assembled

Tesla confirms initial Cybercab builds in Texas as it advances fully autonomous vehicle production and novel assembly methods.

  • Tesla begins Cybercab production at Gigafactory Texas.

  • Vehicle omits steering wheel, relies entirely on FSD software.

  • Unboxed manufacturing approach aims to cut cost and floor space.

Tesla says the first Cybercab units have exited its production line at Gigafactory Texas. Chief executive Elon Musk had previously indicated that initial production would begin in April. The company has not confirmed whether the current vehicles represent pilot builds or the start of series production.

The milestone was announced through a company social media post this week.

The Cybercab is Tesla’s first vehicle designed from the ground up without human-driven controls. The two-seat coupe eliminates both a steering wheel and pedals. Autonomous operation thus relies entirely on Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) software stack.

On existing Tesla passenger vehicles, FSD remains a supervised driver-assistance system requiring an attentive operator. In the Cybercab, the absence of manual controls positions the vehicle as fully autonomous in design intent. Tesla has deployed Model Y vehicles configured for ride-hailing operations in the San Francisco Bay Area and Austin. These vehicles typically operate with safety monitors on board.

California Court Rules Tesla Misled Consumers Over ‘Full Self-Driving’ Claims

Tesla’s autonomous FSD technology continues to face examination in the United States. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has investigated incidents involving Tesla vehicles equipped with FSD or Autopilot following fatal crashes.

The number of Teslas operating without human supervision in Austin remains limited. Public tracking data indicates single-digit vehicle counts in fully driverless operation.

Tesla is entering a field that already includes active commercial operators. Waymo, backed by Alphabet Inc., runs driverless ride-hailing services in select U.S. markets. Zoox, owned by Amazon, is also developing purpose-built autonomous pods.

Unlike its competitors’ box-shaped vehicles, Tesla’s Cybercab adopts a compact coupe format.

Unboxed Manufacturing Strategy

Tesla intends to produce the Cybercab using its “Unboxed” assembly approach. Rather than constructing the vehicle sequentially on a single line, major sections are built in parallel manufacturing zones.

Final integration occurs after sub-assemblies are completed. Tesla states that this configuration reduces plant footprint, lowers production costs, and shortens build times. However, the company has acknowledged that early output will be slow as teams refine the process. Musk previously described the initial ramp as “agonizingly slow.”

Musk has stated in the past that the simplified production architecture could eventually support annual output of up to five million robotaxis. No production forecast has been formally filed with regulators, and Tesla has not released detailed capacity guidance specific to Cybercab.

Manufacturing scale will depend on the validation of the new assembly model and stable supply chain integration.

Any commercial deployment of fully driverless Cybercabs will depend on regulatory acceptance and performance validation.
