Tesla Unveils the Model Y L, a Longer, Taller, and More Powerful Version

Tesla is expanding its Model Y lineup with a new version that’s 186 mm longer and 44 mm taller than the standard model. Most of the added space goes toward the rear to accommodate a more spacious third row of seats. On top of that, output reportedly increases to 455 horsepower.

  • The Model Y L will launch in China first, with a North American release expected to follow

  • Power increases by 9 kW compared to the current version

  • For now, the seating layout is 2+2+2, offering six seats in total

What was once an open secret is now coming into focus. It’s been known for a while that Tesla has been working on a six-seat version of the Model Y, and thanks to filings from China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), we now have our first official look.

Documents submitted to the MIIT reveal a long-wheelbase version called the Model Y L, configured with three rows of seats. The name for the North American market has yet to be confirmed. And while the “L” might suggest just more interior room, industry sources and filings also point to a modest bump in power. The new version is expected to go on sale this fall in China, with a Canadian launch likely not far behind.

Longer, Taller… and Actually Seats Six

The new Model Y L will be configured to seat six passengers, not seven — at least for now. The layout features captain’s chairs in the second row, creating a 2+2+2 setup. Tesla has hinted that a seven-passenger variant is still in the works, and based on this design, it wouldn’t take much — likely just a bench seat or a small reconfiguration — to fit a seventh occupant.

The Model Y L measures 4,976 mm in length, an increase of 186 mm (7.3 in.), and it’s 44 mm (1.7 in.) taller than the current version. Tesla also stretched the wheelbase to 3,040 mm, up 150 mm (5.9 in.) from the five-seater. Other changes include unique wheels, a revised rear spoiler, slightly updated lighting elements, new seats, and even what appears to be a new gold paint option.

A Modest Power Bump

According to official filings, the Model Y L doesn’t just get more space — it also gets more power. The standard Model Y offers 331 kW (443 hp), while the L version climbs to 340 kW (455 hp). The 9 kW gain should help offset the added weight of the larger platform and extra seating.

Coming Soon to Canada?

A Tesla email sent to U.S. owners back in June hinted at a North American rollout for the Model Y L. Further leaks from internal code suggest this will be a global model. Now that the Chinese version has been officially revealed, all signs point to its Canadian arrival being just around the corner.

Tesla is no doubt hoping the Model Y L can help reinvigorate interest in the crossover, which has seen a sales slump in recent months — partly due to Elon Musk’s growing political ties with the Trump administration.
