This is the “hero car” driven by Tom Cruise in the 1983 film.
This same car was sold for under $50,000 in 2011.
We were curious about the 1979 Porsche 928 featured at last weekend’s Barrett-Jackson’s inaugural Houston auction. Like all of you, we at Motor Illustrated love to shop online for random cars and found less than a handful of Porsche 928s for sale. We’d have never guessed it would have sold for nearly $2 million.
Lot #749 from Barrett-Jackson’s auction happens to be the one “hero car” that was driven by Tom Cruise during the filming “Risky Business” back in 1983. There were three 928s used in the movie but this is the one that was prominently featured. Initially, this 928 was painted white and was refinished in gold for the movie. Beyond this fact, there’s nothing special about this Porsche 928.
Back in 2011, this same 1979 Porsche 928 sold at a Hollywood Memorabilia for $49,200 according to autoweek. A decade ago, the paid price was roughly four times the car’s value, a reasonable amount given the car’s pedigree. Last weekend’s auction is a huge leap from the previous sale price. The roughly $1.8 million gap between the car’s actual worth and the sales price is a little more difficult to explain.
