Back in 2010 when I was a sales rep for a Volvo dealership, I remember how much debating went into how to spec our first XC60s which were starting to arrive in North America. For those who can recall, that first-generation XC60 was available in a color called Lime Grass Green, and there was also another odd one called Terra Bronze.
Our three-year-old-never-sold bright red C70 looming in the background, we decided against ordering anything that wasn’t black, white, silver or grey. A few months later my first two potential XC60 sales fell through because we didn’t have that “cute green color I see in the ads”.
All this to say that figuring out how to spec the cars that will grace the showroom is quite the chess game for dealerships. The game is made even more difficult by the manufacturers who seem to take quite the pleasure in promoting colors no dealership in their right mind would order.
The colorful 2019 Volkswagen Golf R
This brings us now to Volkswagen who announced back in August their intention to offer the 2019 Volkswagen Golf R in over 40 colors. We didn’t think it was going to happen, but our friends at the CarGuide wrote about it yesterday, and all my memories of figuring which red isn’t too red for a Volvo S60 came back to me.
Yes, the 2019 Volkswagen Golf R can be had in any of the 40 colors you see below for $2,995 along with four standard colors (Grey, Black, Blue, and Red) and an optional White Pearl offered at $450.
As a customer and a Golf R enthusiast, I’m in love with each of these colors. As a former dealership sales rep, all I can say is good luck to all you VW dealers out there. You just know you’ll have ordered two Raspberry Reds and one Sarantos Turquoise, and the first client in will want Reseda Green.
