The 2023 BMW X7 Arrives with a New Look and More Technology

BMW revised the X7 for 2023, giving it a new appearance and more technology than ever.

  • The BMW X7 was given an extensive facelift

  • A 48-volt mild-hybrid system is now available on both engines

  • More driver assistance features and a new iDrive infotainment system are added

BMW refreshed the X7 3-row SUV, the largest vehicle it sells, with a new exterior style and a host of new technologies inside and under the hood.

The X7 is the flagship SUV in the BMW lineup so it acts as a sort of technology showcase for the brand by integrating many of the advancements made by the brand before they are applied to the smaller and more affordable models.

The new X7 will feature even more technology than before by adding or improving its driver assistance features, its infotainment system and its powertrains.

Indeed, improvements have been made to the forward collision warning system, which is now able to detect and avoid pedestrians, cyclists and other cars when the vehicle is engaged in a turn. The adaptive cruise control is now also able to recognise traffic lights and a warning will alert drivers and passengers to the presence of cars or cyclists when they open a door.

The automated parking system is also improved, it is now capable of piloting the vehicle on distances up to 200 meters and store the manoeuvres it makes to memory. This means that the X7 can be driven close to a place where it has parked itself before and then take control until the operation is completed, without driver input. Included in this last system is the new Trailer Assistant, which helps when reversing a trailer with the new X7.

In terms of infotainment, the X7 is now equipped with the latest version of the brand’s iDrive system which features a curved 14.9-inch screen. This center screen works in conjunction with the 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and it can be controlled by touch and by natural speech, but also by gestures made in front of the screen.

The powertrains of the X7 have also been reworked slightly in order to be more efficient and develop more power. The standard 3.0L inline-six-cylinder engine has been tweaked to produce 380 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque, which is 47 horsepower and 52 lb-ft more than the previous model. This engine can see its output further increased by the addition of a 48-volt mild-hybrid system that uses a small electric motor placed on the crankshaft of the gasoline engine.

This system is also available on the other available engine, which is the twin-turbocharged 4.4L V8. This engine powers the X7 M60i xDrive with its output of 530 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque.

The appearance of the refreshed X7 adopts the new styling direction from BMW that will also be applied to the new 7 series and the i7 electric sedan. This means that the front end is becoming more angular and the headlamps have been moved down slightly to separate them from the daytime tunning lights, forming tow distinct lighting units on each side of the car.

Inside, the changes are more subtle, with the most noticeable difference being that both the infotainment and the driver information screens are now joined together in a single panel sat atop the dashboard.
