The Volkswagen Golf GTI was originally launched in Europe in 1976 which will make it 47 years old in 2023. North America had to wait seven years for the GTI but we forgive Volkswagen today. One reason is that they will introduce a commemorative 40th Anniversary Edition next year to mark the birthday.
The Volkswagen GTI has and remains one of the best sport compact hot hatchbacks in the world. The new MK8 GTI might not be without a few flaws, one of which will be fixed, but it’s still an incredibly appealing package and a wonderfully spirited daily driver and has been for 40 years in North America.
“The limited-production 40th Anniversary Edition model offers our North American enthusiasts a dose of heritage along with everything they love about the Mark 8 GTI,” said Hein Schafer, Senior Vice President of Product and Strategy, at Volkswagen of America.
The 2023 Volkswagen Golf GTI 40th Anniversary Edition will be available in four exterior colors: Urano Grey and Tornado Red (unique to the 40th Anniversary Edition) will be joined by Opal White Pearl and Pomelo Yellow Metallic. The car will roll on 19-inch gloss black multi-spoke alloy wheels with red pinstripes, feature a gloss black roof and mirror caps, and “40” elements inside and out.
Only 1,500 will be offered for sale in the US. Pricing is set at $33,055 for manual transmission models and $33,855 for automatic transmission.
Volkswagen Canada is working on their press release with details on this special model. We will share it when it becomes available.
